Celebrate Menominee’s Cultural Heritage Day

The annual Menominee Indian Tribe’s lumberjack breakfast and Cultural Heritage Day workshops are slated for Oct. 12 at the Menominee Logging Camp Museum, W3426 County Road VV, Keshena.

Sponsored by the Menominee Tribal Historical Preservation Office, serving of the breakfast fundraiser will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until the food is gone.

The menu will consist of eggs, fried potatoes, oatmeal, toast, two pieces bacon, two sausages and your choice of beverage of coffee, tea, juice or milk. Also, real maple syrup will be served for all the pancakes you can eat.

Wisconsin had 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending Sept. 15, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Dry weather allowed for good progress on many field activities, including harvesting corn silage, cutting hay, seeding winter wheat and manure application.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 5% very short, 35%, 59% and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 3% very short, 23% short, 72% adequate and 2% surplus.

Board looks at its role, education improvement

When a critical incident unfolds at a school, the last thing anybody wants is confusion in dealing with the situation.

That includes school officials, law enforcement and families using different terminology in working through the incident as well as relating to each other about the emergency.

Lt. Chris Madle, Shawano County’s emergency management director, is working with all county school districts to ensure everyone is on the same page.

County to borrow $2.2 million for 2025 budget

Shawano County officials were authorized to borrow up to $2.2 million to help the county pay for its 2025 operational budget.

The motion was approved Sept. 18 by the Shawano County Executive Committee and will be forwarded to the County Board for final approval in October.

Supervisors made the decision after all departments were forced to trim 3% from their original levy requests to reduce the amount of borrowing from an original projection of $2.975 million.

Bonduel cleaning up village in October, November

The village of Bonduel has announced its annual fall cleanup event.

Leaf collection will begin Oct. 15 and end Nov. 22. Collection days are scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the time period. Weather conditions, quantity of leaves and work priorities will dictate when each location will be serviced. Leaf collection is free and open to all village residents.

Get your fill of apples at Taste of Tigerton

Whether it’s for the crisp autumn air or the bite of a delicious apple, area residents are invited to Tigerton on Sept. 28 for the annual celebration that features the fruit in all its glory.

From whole apples to pies to cider, there’s something for everyone at the Taste of Tigerton Applefest at Legion Park, 236 Pine St., Tigerton.

“It’s a way for the community to gather and share in that fellowship and get a little shopping done, too,” said Jon Knaup, manager of Tigerton Main Street, the event sponsor. “They usually plan for about 300 people to attend.”

Menominee history, forest subject of statewide conference

The Forest History Association of Wisconsin is partnering with the Menominee Tribe’s Historic Preservation Officer and its forest manager to tell the story of change in the lives of tribal members and their forest that began more than 200 years ago and continues even today.

The storytelling began in September with a pair of free webinars to be followed by a conference in Keshena, set for Oct. 11-12.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Department
