Wisconsin wildlife officials released a revised draft wolf management plan Aug. 1 that recommends holding the statewide population at around 1,000 animals, a concession to conservatives looking for a hard limit.

Wisconsin DNR announces November wolf harvest quota

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced Oct. 4 that the statewide quota for the fall 2021 wolf season has been set at 130 wolves.

The department is authorized by state statute and the department’s rules to make the final decision on the quota for the fall 2021 wolf harvest. In determining the quota, the department considered the best available information and scientific modeling, as well as the input from the Wolf Harvest Committee, the Natural Resources Board, and the many groups and members of the public who provided comments to the department and the Board.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced Dec. 4 that the official wolf season will begin Nov. 6, 2021.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will delist gray wolves from the federal list of endangered species on Jan. 4, returning management authority to the lower 48 states and tribes.

Under Wisconsin law, when the wolf is delisted, the state’s annual hunting and trapping seasons shall resume.

Verna Ida Emma Wolf, 96, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2013, in Appleton. Born on June 9, 1917, in Watertown, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ella (Kube) Buchert. She was baptized on July 1, 1917, and confirmed on March 29, 1931, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. She graduated from Elm Grove School and attended Watertown High School. On May 20, 1939, she was united in marriage to Leonard J. Wolf in Watertown. After marriage, the couple moved to the town of Belle Plaine where they farmed the Emil Wolf family farm for 35 years.
