Experience could help Wisconsin return to form this season

Perhaps no program savors a return to normalcy this season as much as Wisconsin.

The Badgers canceled two games last year due to a COVID-19 outbreak and dealt with numerous injuries during a three-game skid. The Badgers finished 4-3 with a Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over Wake Forest.

“We have a lot to prove after the year we had last year,” safety Collin Wilder said. “It was disappointing as fans, disappointing as players.”

Now they’re back with an experienced roster that includes a half-dozen sixth-year seniors.

Wisconsin believes it has enough talent in the backfield to regain its status as one of the top Power Five rushing attacks after taking a step back last year.

Which player will get used most often remains uncertain.

Wisconsin returns its leading rusher from last season in Jalen Berger but also has brought in Clemson transfer Chez Mellusi and heralded freshman Braelon Allen. Running backs coach Gary Brown hasn’t decided how he will divide carries.

Wisconsin men's basketball team announces 2021-22 nonconference schedule

The Wisconsin men’s basketball program announced its 2021-22 non-conference schedule on Aug. 10, featuring a home matchup with rival Marquette and a Thanksgiving trip to Maui.

The Badgers are scheduled to get things started Oct. 29 by hosting an exhibition against UW-Whitewater at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin tips off the regular season Nov. 9, hosting St. Francis Brooklyn at the Kohl Center. UW will also welcome in-state opponent Green Bay to Madison on Nov. 12.

Badgers aim to regain consistency that was missing last year

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst discussed the key to quarterback Graham Mertz’s development by utilizing a theme that came up time and time again during a news conference on the state of the Badgers’ program.

“He’s got to be more consistent,” Chryst said Aug. 5 on the eve of Wisconsin’s first practice. “You know, I’ll end up saying that about every guy the whole time, but it’s the truth.”

Consistency has pretty much defined Wisconsin’s program for most of the last two decades, but that trait was missing last year as the Badgers went 4-3 in a rollercoaster season.

Wisconsin’s Sanborn a part of Big Ten’s preseason football honors

The Big Ten Conference announced its 2021 football preseason honors on July 22 in conjunction with the start of Big Ten Football Media Days at Lucas Oil Stadium.

A media panel selected the 10-member preseason list, with five representatives each from the East and West Divisions.

Looking back on a year of challenge and adversity due to the COVID pandemic, Wisconsin’s student-athletes continued to excel in both competition and the classroom. Among their peers, two exceptional student-athletes from the Badgers’ hockey programs have been named University of Wisconsin Athletes of the Year.

Wisconsin Athletics releases policy on name, image and likeness

With student-athletes able to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness (NIL) beginning July 1, Wisconsin Athletics has released its initial policies to guide student-athletes’ use of NIL for commercial purposes.

The policy was presented to UW student-athletes and staff June 30 following the NCAA Division I Board of Directors’ vote to adopt an interim NIL policy.

UW’s policy, which is considered temporary and subject to change in light of the rapidly-changing nature of NIL guidance from the NCAA, is available at UWBadgers.com.

Badgers to celebrate Barry Alvarez Day on Oct. 2

Wisconsin Athletics will celebrate Barry Alvarez Day presented by BMO Harris on Oct. 2 when the Badgers host Michigan at Camp Randall Stadium.

University of Wisconsin will honor Alvarez, who officially retired June 30 after more than 30 years in Madison, 16 as head football coach and the last 18 as director of athletics.

100% capacity announced for Wisconsin athletics home events

Following a season that saw University of Wisconsin sporting events played in empty venues, Wisconsin Athletics announced that there will be no capacity limits at Badger home events this season. The decision was made by UW Athletics officials following consultation with campus officials.

“We are thrilled to be able to welcome fans back to our venues beginning this fall,” UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said. “The thought of 80,000 fans in Camp Randall Stadium on a Saturday or a packed Field House cheering on the volleyball team on a Friday night gives me chills.”

Wisconsin’s Jonathan Davis makes USA Basketball U19 World Cup Team

Wisconsin sophomore Jonathan Davis has been selected as one of 12 members to represent USA Basketball at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, the organization announced June 24.

Originally one of 26 players invited to take part at training camp in Fort Worth, Texas, last week, Davis made the final cut for Team USA’s final 12-man roster.

The team will continue training in Texas on the campus of TCU through June 28, before traveling to Riga, Latvia for the 2021 FIBA World Cup, which will take place July 3-11.
