Wisconsin dismisses running back Jalen Berger from team

Wisconsin has dismissed running back Jalen Berger from its football program one year after he led the team in rushing.

Badgers coach Paul Chryst announced the move in a statement Oct. 10 without specifying a reason for the dismissal. Berger didn’t play Saturday in Wisconsin’s 24-0 victory at Illinois.

Berger, who is from Newark, New Jersey, rushed for a team-high 301 yards as a freshman last season despite missing three of Wisconsin’s seven games due to injury. But his playing time had been sporadic this year as he slipped down the depth chart.

Maui Jim Maui Invitational relocating to Las Vegas

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team was slated to spend Thanksgiving holiday in Hawaii, but will instead be traveling to Las Vegas. Due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Maui Jim Maui Invitational is relocating to Las Vegas this season, as announced by the tournament on Oct. 2.

Remaining on the originally scheduled dates from Nov. 22-24, the event will now be held at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Casino.

The field is still expected to include Butler, Chaminade, Houston, Notre Dame, Oregon, Saint Mary’s, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.

Field at Camp Randall Stadium to be named for Barry Alvarez

Beginning with the 2022 season, the field at Camp Randall Stadium will be named for legendary former Wisconsin football coach and director of athletics Barry Alvarez, UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank announced at a ceremony held Oct. 1 at Camp Randall.

“Barry Alvarez has had an immeasurable impact on the UW-Madison campus, beyond in the state and in college sports,” Blank said during the ceremony. “And that type of career deserves recognition at the very highest level.

Wisconsin football team routed by Michigan

The Wisconsin Badgers football team was outscored 25-7 in the second half of a 38-17 Big Ten Conference loss to the Michigan Wolverines on Oct. 2 in Madison.

Wisconsin is now 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The Badgers were outgained 365-210 in the contest and turned the ball over three times. Wisconsin only rushed for 43 yards on 32 attempts.

Wisconsin struggled again on third downs, converting just three of 14 attempts. Michigan converted seven third-down chances and three fourth-down opportunities.

Chryst says Wisconsin’s troubles on offense go beyond Mertz

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst says the Badgers’ problems on offense don’t rest solely with struggling quarterback Graham Mertz.

Mertz was 18 for 41 for 240 yards with four interceptions and a fumble in the Badgers’ 41-13 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday. He threw two pick-sixes in the game’s final 2 minutes, 13 seconds.

Chryst said Monday his message to the sophomore is to stay positive. Mertz has thrown only one touchdown pass along with six interceptions this season.

Wisconsin to retire Michael Finley’s jersey

One of the true legends of Wisconsin basketball, Michael Finley, will be immortalized when his name and number are raised into the rafters of the Kohl Center later this season. The University of Wisconsin will officially retire Finley’s No. 24 jersey during a halftime ceremony, as announced by athletic director Chris McIntosh on Sept. 24.

Badgers suffer lopsided loss to Irish

The Wisconsin football team was outscored 31-3 in the fourth quarter of an eventual 41-13 loss to Notre Dame on Sept. 25 in Chicago.

A 27-yard field goal from Collin Larsh gave the No. 18 Badgers a 13-10 lead over the No. 12 Fighting Irish with 14 minutes, 14 seconds to play. Notre Dame returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards to get the lead right back and then tacked on a passing touchdown to go up 24-13 with 9:34 to play.

A 37-yard field goal with 3:20 to play made it 27-13 before Notre Dame returned two interceptions for touchdowns to seal the game.

Mellusi powers Wisconsin football team past Eastern Michigan

Chez Mellusi ran for 144 yards and a touchdown, leading No. 18 Wisconsin to a 37-7 victory over Eastern Michigan on Sept. 11 in Madison.

Wisconsin (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten) piled up 352 rushing yards and also dominated on defense against Eastern Michigan (0-2), which had 92 total yards on offense. The Eagles had three first downs.

Mellusi, a Clemson transfer, became the first Wisconsin running back to record consecutive 100-yard rushing games in his first two contests since Corey Clement in 2013.

Wisconsin men’s basketball team announces 2021-22 schedule

With Wednesday’s announcement of the Big Ten Conference slate, the Wisconsin men’s basketball program unveiled its complete 2021-22 schedule — which includes 17 regular season home games at the Kohl Center.

Fans will have the opportunity to get their first look at this season’s team at the annual red-white scrimmage, which is set for Oct. 17 at the Kohl Center. Time will be announced at a later date.

Wisconsin is scheduled to host UW-Whitewater for an exhibition on Oct. 29.

Errors costly for Badgers in season-opening loss

Wisconsin (0-1) had its string of 25 consecutive victories in home openers snapped because of its red-zone failures. The Badgers dominated time of possession but had four scoreless trips inside Penn State’s 25-yard line, including three inside the 10.
