Wisconsin holds off Arizona State in Las Vegas Bowl

Braelon Allen thought his week in Las Vegas was rather uneventful.

After all, it's hard to really soak in Sin City when you're only 17 years old. He'll have to settle for his MVP award.

Allen ran for 159 yards and Wisconsin drained the final 9:57 off the clock with an 18-play drive that sealed a 20-13 victory over Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 30.

Blocking Nebraska, Rettke carries Badgers to national volleyball title

There’s a reason Wisconsin’s Dana Rettke was named the college women’s volleyball National Player of the Year on Dec. 17.

On Dec. 18, the five-time, first-team All-American’s 11th and final kill gave Wisconsin a 22-25, 31-29, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12 victory over Nebraska and the Badgers’ first national championship.

Rettke also finished with a career-high 13 blocks in her collegiate finale.

“Oh, my God. I cannot believe it,” Rettke said in the immediate moments after the win. “I’m just so proud of this team and how we battled and how we fought.”

Badgers to face Arizona State in Las Vegas Bowl

For the 20th consecutive season, the University of Wisconsin football team is going bowling.

For the first time in school history, that bowl appearance will come in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl. The Badgers (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten) will face Arizona State (8-4, 6-3 Pac-12) on Dec. 30 at Allegiant Stadium. The game will kick off at 9:30 p.m. and be televised by ESPN.

Wisconsin falters at Minnesota

The Wisconsin Badgers football team suffered a 23-13 loss to Big Ten Conference rival Minnesota on Nov. 27 in Minneapolis.

The setback not only gave the hosting Gophers Paul Bunyan’s Axe for winning the rivalry game, but it also cost the Badgers a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Wisconsin led 10-3 after safety Scott Nelson intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

It was the last touchdown the Badgers scored, as the offense struggled for most of the contest and the Gophers pulled away in the second half.

Allen carries Wisconsin to win over Nebraska

Braelon Allen continued a tradition of Wisconsin running backs steamrolling Nebraska defenses.

Allen rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns — including a tiebreaking 53-yarder with 3:50 remaining — to help No. 19 Wisconsin outlast Nebraska 35-28 for its seventh consecutive victory on Nov. 20.

Braelon Allen understood the importance of his role following Chez Mellusi's injury, sidelining Wisconsin's leading rusher for the rest of the season.

Allen handled that burden as effectively as he has accepted every other task assigned to him during his exceptional freshman season.

The 17-year-old Allen rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 20 Wisconsin beat Northwestern 35-7 for its sixth consecutive victory on Nov. 13.

“I told Chez I was going to finish the season for the both of us,” Allen said.

Wisconsin wins fifth straight, beats Rutgers

Not only has Wisconsin put its horrid 1-3 start behind it, everything is suddenly within reach for the Badgers.
Graham Mertz threw a season-high three touchdown passes and Wisconsin won its fifth straight game and become bowl eligible for the 20th straight year with a 52-3 victory over Rutgers on Nov. 6.
“I can say about everyone on the team, guys are truly putting out during the week,” said Mertz, who was 11 of 16 for 240 yards."We see the work that everybody puts in and it’s getting to a special place. So got to keep building on it."

Defense carries Wisconsin to triumph over Iowa

Wisconsin safety Collin Wilder was planning his Halloween costume this week when he bought a red and white hat for $7 at a mall and wrote a message on it with a Sharpie.

Just like that, he came up with the object that best symbolizes how the Badgers have turned their season around.

Wisconsin freshman running back Braelon Allen figures the Badgers got back to their their strengths.

Graham Mertz completed just 5 of 8 passes for 52 yards. But it didn’t matter with the Badgers running for 290 yards on 51 carries.

“That’s Wisconsin football. That’s what we’re known for, imposing our will on defenses,” Allen said. “We are finally getting back to our brand of football. It’s worked for the longest time.”

Chez Mellusi ran for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Allen had 140 yards and two scores to help Wisconsin beat No. 25 Purdue 30-13 on Oct. 23

Chenal's big game helps Wisconsin outlast Army

The one big weakness of Wisconsin’s otherwise outstanding defense this season has been its inability to force turnovers.

But the Badgers finally produced a takeaway at a critical moment Saturday late in the fourth quarter and outlasted a pesky Army team 20-14.

Army (4-2) trailed 13-7 and had the ball when Leo Chenal delivered a punishing hit that knocked the ball loose from quarterback Jabari Laws. Wisconsin’s Keeanu Benton recovered the fumble at Army’s 1-yard line with 2:55 remaining.
