Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis rises to stardom

Wisconsin guard Johnny Davis drives to the basket with the same ferocity he used to show while running over defenders as a high school quarterback.

Davis’ emergence as the Big Ten Player of the Year and a likely NBA lottery pick has been one of college basketball’s biggest surprises this season. The 6-foot-5 sophomore believes his football experience made him a better basketball player.

“Playing football and taking shots, as a quarterback especially, it just prepares you for that physicality and allows you to get knocked down and get back up real quick,” Davis said.

Al Johnson named Badgers running backs coach

The Wisconsin football program has added a familiar face to its coaching staff with the addition of Al Johnson as running backs coach.

Head coach Paul Chryst announced the move March 17.

The move is a homecoming for Johnson, who has contributed to highly-successful Badgers teams both as a player and coach. He returns to his alma mater after serving as head coach at East Central University since 2018. He also has served as the NCAA Division II school’s interim athletics director since July 2021.

Wisconsin Badgers basketball star Johnny Davis was named to The Associated Press All-America men’s basketball team on March 15.

Davis earned 57 first-place votes and 294 points to earn his first-team spot. Only Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebwe (59 first-place votes, 298 points) had more.

The Wisconsin sophomore heads into the NCAA Tournament with season averages of 19.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and has led the Badgers to a 24-7 overall record.

After earning a share of the Big Ten Conference regular season title, Wisconsin received a handful of postseason league honors on March 8, headlined by Big Ten Coach of the Year Greg Gard and Big Ten Player of the Year Johnny Davis.

In addition, Brad Davison earned second-team All-Big Ten honors, Chucky Hepburn earned Big Ten All-Freshmen Team distinction, and Tyler Wahl was awarded All-Big Ten honorable mention.

Chucky Hepburn tried to keep a straight face as the freshman insisted he knew his game-winning 3-pointer was accurate as soon as he took the shot.

The laughter from his teammates told a different story.

Hepburn banked in a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to give No. 10 Wisconsin a 70-67 victory over No. 8 Purdue on March 1 that clinched the Badgers a share of the Big Ten regular season title.

“I knew we were about to be Big Ten champs after I released it,” Hepburn said before breaking out a grin.

The Badgers have plenty of reason to smile.

Wisconsin’s Gard gets fined, Neath suspended a game

The Big Ten Conference released a statement Feb. 21 and announced fines and suspensions for the Feb. 20 postgame altercation between the Wisconsin and Michigan men’s basketball teams.

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard received a $10,000 fine, while player Jahcobi Neath was suspended a game. Michigan head coach Juwan Howard was suspended five games and fined $40,000, while players Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabate were each suspended a game.

Angry about Wisconsin calling a late timeout, Michigan coach Juwan Howard began arguing in the postgame handshake line.

Moments later, he hit a Badgers assistant in the head, and mayhem followed.

The Wolverines’ inability to boost their NCAA Tournament credentials was the least of their concerns after a 77-63 loss Feb. 21 at No. 15 Wisconsin. Their head coach could be facing major discipline after his poke turned a pushing-and-shoving scrum into a punch-filled brawl.

Big Ten announces changes to 2022 football schedule

The Big Ten Conference on Jan. 12 announced changes to the 2022 football schedule which has resulted in some modifications to Wisconsin’s schedule for next season.

Barry Alvarez Field will debut when the Badgers kick off 2022 at Camp Randall Stadium on Sept. 3 against Illinois State. That game will also mark the grand opening of the CR Future project, the comprehensive renovation of the south end of Camp Randall. Nonconference home games against Washington State (Sept. 10) and New Mexico State (Sept. 17) will follow.

Johnny Davis named to Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list

Johnny Davis has established himself as one of the best players in college basketball, which was endorsed Jan. 5 by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, as the sophomore guard was named to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list.

The list, comprised of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor, was determined by a poll of national college basketball experts based on the performances during the 2021-22 season thus far.
