Wisconsin football team pummeled by Illinois

The Wisconsin Badgers football followed up an ugly loss to Ohio State with an even uglier loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini on Oct. 1 in Madison.

Wisconsin was outscored 20-0 in the second half and lost 34-10 to fall to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the Big Ten Conference.

The Badgers were outgained 304-208, and managed just 2 net rushing yards. Wisconsin turned the ball over three times.

Not much went right for the Wisconsin Badgers football team during a 52-21 Big Ten Conference loss to Ohio State on Sept. 24 in Columbus.

Ohio State received the opening kickoff and drove 88 yards in six plays in under three minutes to grab a 7-0 lead.

Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz was intercepted on the team’s first passing attempt, and two plays later, Ohio State scored again to make it 14-0.

Wisconsin offense then went three-and-out. The Buckeyes’ offense needed just seven plays to go 70 yards and score a third touchdown.

Wisconsin football team routs New Mexico State

The Wisconsin Badgers football team bounced back from a loss with a 66-7 rout of New Mexico State on Sept. 17 in Madison.

It was a slow start for the Badgers, who led just 7-0 after a quarter. Wisconsin scored three touchdowns in the first four minutes of the second quarter and finished the quarter with 28 points. Wisconsin added 21 more points in the third quarter and added a ninth touchdown and field goal in the final quarter.

Wisconsin outgained New Mexico State 595-242. The Badgers passed for 335 yards and had just four passes fall incomplete.

Wisconsin football team upset by Washington State

Washington State running back Nakia Watson acknowledged having extra motivation this week facing his former team, the Wisconsin Badgers. No wonder he was a little more emotional than usual afterward.

Watson scored both of Washington State’s touchdowns as the Cougars upset No. 19 Wisconsin 17-14 on Sept. 10. Watson rushed for 522 yards and five touchdowns at Wisconsin from 2019-20 before transferring.

“Normally, I’m not a person that cries,” Watson said afterward. “But I cried a little bit, I’m not going to lie.”

Allen, Torchio help Wisconsin football team rip Illinois State

Wisconsin teammates John Torchio and Braelon Allen created a couple of truly memorable moments in an otherwise forgettable season-opening matchup.

Allen had a 96-yard touchdown scamper for the longest run from scrimmage in program history and Torchio had the school's longest interception return as the 18th-ranked Badgers trounced Championship Subdivision program Illinois State 38-0 on Aug. 4 in Madison.

The two record-setting touchdowns showcased Wisconsin's big-play ability across its roster.

Pride of Hawaii: Herbig ready to lead Wisconsin’s defense

Wisconsin outside linebacker Nick Herbig’s teammates noticed something different about him as soon as he arrived on campus two years ago.

The audacity that enabled him to pick a school over 4,000 miles away from his Hawaii home helped make Herbig an immediate weapon for a defense that annually ranks among the nation’s best. As the Badgers replace eight of their top 10 tacklers from last season, they’ll have to count on Herbig for leadership.

According to his teammates, he’s been providing that all along.

Badgers’ Mertz confident he can improve his consistency

Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz’s production thus far hasn’t lived up to the standards set by his lofty recruiting ranking and sparkling debut as a starter.

He’s ready to stabilize what has been an erratic career by helping the Badgers earn the Big Ten Championship Game appearance that has eluded them each of his first two seasons as a starter.

“My word’s been ‘consistency’ the whole year,” Mertz said Aug. 2, the eve of Wisconsin’s first preseason practice as the Badgers prepare for their Sept. 3 opener with Illinois State.

Johnny Davis, Dana Rettke named Wisconsin Athletes of the Year

Johnny Davis from the Wisconsin men’s basketball team and Dana Rettke from the Badger volleyball team have been named the 2021-22 Wisconsin Athletes of the Year, the UW Athletic Department announced.

Davis earns his first Athlete of the Year award while Rettke picks up her second honor after being named the UW and Big Ten Conference Female Athlete of the Year in 2019-20.

The duo will now be up for the 2021-22 Big Ten Athletes of the Year, which will be announced June 29.

Wisconsin’s Davis selected 10th overall in 2022 NBA Draft

Johnny Davis became the latest Badger to see his NBA dreams come true, as the Wisconsin men’s basketball standout was selected by the Washington Wizards with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft on June 23 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Davis became Wisconsin’s highest drafted player and UW’s first NBA lottery pick since Frank Kaminsky went ninth overall to the Charlotte Hornets in the 2015 NBA Draft. Sam Dekker was also selected in 2015, drafted 18th overall in the first round by the Houston Rockets.

Wisconsin basketball teams to participate in ‘Brew City Battle’

Wisconsin Athletics has announced the Aurora Health Care “Brew City Battle,” a groundbreaking event featuring both the Wisconsin men’s and women’s basketball teams competing in a doubleheader at American Family Field on Nov. 11.

The first basketball games ever played at the home of the Milwaukee Brewers, the Wisconsin women’s team will face Kansas State followed by the UW men’s team taking on Stanford.

Game times and television designations will be announced at a later date.
