Wisconsin falls to Minnesota in regular season finale

The Wisconsin Badgers football team was outscored 10-0 in the fourth quarter and lost 23-16 to Minnesota on Nov. 26 in Madison.

The Badgers capped the regular season with a 6-6 overall record and disappointing 4-5 mark in Big Ten Conference play.

Wisconsin grabbed a 16-13 lead late in the third quarter after receiver Chimere Dike scored on a 9-yard run. Minnesota tied it with a 27-yard field goal with 7:58 to play and then won it on a 45-yard passing touchdown with 3:40 to go.

A Wisconsin team that has endured the midseason firing of its head coach and the death of a former teammate let its emotions spill out as groups of players gathered near midfield at Memorial Stadium to celebrate and pose for pictures with the Freedom Trophy.

Graham Mertz scored on a 2-yard quarterback sneak with 35 seconds left to complete a comeback from an 11-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, and the Badgers beat Nebraska 15-14 on Nov. 19 for their ninth straight win in the series.

Wisconsin football team falls to 5-5 after loss to Iowa

The Wisconsin football team struggled offensively and lost 24-10 to Iowa on Nov. 12 in Iowa City, Iowa.

The loss dropped the Badgers to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in Big Ten play.

Wisconsin actually outgained Iowa 227-146 on the day, but three turnovers cost the Badgers.

The Badgers scored first on a 24-yard field goal from Nate Van Zelst and led 3-0 after a quarter. Iowa grabbed the lead after blocking a Wisconsin punt and scoring a touchdown two plays later.

Guerendo, Allen lead Wisconsin past Maryland

Wisconsin’s players are making a strong argument that interim football head coach Jim Leonhard deserves to have the job for keeps.

Isaac Guerendo ran for an 89-yard touchdown and combined with Braelon Allen for 233 yards rushing as Wisconsin defeated Maryland 23-10 on Nov. 5 in Madison. Wisconsin (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten) improved to 3-1 under Leonhard, who was promoted from defensive coordinator after the firing of Paul Chryst last month.

Graham Mertz likes the direction that Wisconsin interim head coach Jim Leonhard is taking the Badgers.

Mertz threw for two touchdowns, Braelon Allen rushed for 113 yards and a score and Wisconsin defeated Purdue 35-24 on Oct. 22 in Madison.

John Torchio had two interceptions, including a 31-yard return for a touchdown for the Badgers (4-4, 2-3 Big Ten Conference), who rebounded from a 34-28 double overtime loss at Michigan State.

The game marked the first home win for Leonhard, who took over for Paul Chryst on Oct. 2.

Quarterback Payton Thorne threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jayden Reed in the second overtime to lift Michigan State to a 34-28 victory over Wisconsin on Oct. 15in East Lansing, Michigan.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Spartans (3-4, 1-3 Big 10). It is the first loss for Wisconsin’s interim coach Jim Leonhard who replaced Paul Chryst two weeks ago.

Wisconsin OT Logan Brown dismissed from football team

Wisconsin offensive tackle Logan Brown has been dismissed from the team because of an “internal incident,” interim coach Jim Leonhard said Oct. 13.

Brown, a former five-star recruit, had tweeted late Oct. 12 that he was entering the transfer portal.

“The reality of what happened is there was an internal incident here within the program and Logan Brown was dismissed from the program,” Leonhard said. “It was not a choice. He was dismissed from our program.”

The nerves that hit Jim Leonhard during the week as he prepared for his first game following longtime boss Paul Chryst’s firing were long gone by the time game day rolled around.

He woke up feeling just fine. This made his day better.

Graham Mertz threw for a career-high 299 yards and matched a career high with five touchdowns, Chimere Dike set personal bests with 185 yards receiving and three TD catches, and Wisconsin dominated in interim coach Leonhard’s first game, pounding struggling Northwestern 42-7 on Oct. 8 in Evanston, Illinois.

Wisconsin’s Leonhard gets his shot under tough circumstances

Jim Leonhard would have preferred much different circumstances, but the former Wisconsin safety and NFL veteran has been given the opportunity to lead his alma mater’s football program.

How long he has this chance depends on whether he can help Wisconsin salvage a season that’s gone so far off track that it resulted in former coach Paul Chryst’s firing over the weekend. Leonhard acknowledged feeling mixed emotions about his appointment due to his respect for Chryst.

Wisconsin fired head coach Paul Chryst on Oct. 2 after a 2-3 start to his eighth season leading the school where he played, in the city where he grew up.

The surprising move comes a day after Wisconsin lost at home 34-10 to Illinois and former Badgers coach Bret Bielema.

“This is certainly not a decision that’s taken lightly,” athletic director Chris McIntosh said at a news conference. “It’s not a game-by-game decision. This is a decision that’s based on where we’re at as a program.”
