CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The plan was for Wisconsin to roll into a showdown with Ohio State next week unbeaten, with a defense putting up historic numbers and a Heisman Trophy contender at running back.

Illinois had other plans.

James McCourt kicked a 39-yard field as time expired and the Illini pulled off the biggest upset of the college football season, knocking off No. 6 Wisconsin 24-23 on Saturday.

MADISON — Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said he knew the Spartans were going to have to stop Jonathan Taylor if they were going to have any shot at stealing a win at No. 8 Wisconsin on Saturday.

The Spartans' defense limited Taylor to just 80 yards on 26 carries, marking the first time this season the Heisman Trophy hopeful was held under 100. But Michigan State was held to 149 yards, 30 rushing, and couldn't find any rhythm as the Spartans fell to the Badgers 38-0.

MADISON — Jonathan Taylor has had his fair share of struggles against Northwestern. The going was tough against the Wildcats again on Saturday, but Wisconsin's Heisman Trophy contender helped the eighth-ranked Badgers stay unbeaten with some bullish yards.

Taylor ran for 119 yards and his 11th touchdown of the season, Wisconsin got two scores from its defense, and the Badgers defeated the Wildcats 24-15.

"(I'm) proud of the way the guys battled and fought against a really good football team, a team that we've always had tough games with," Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said.

MADISON — Pat Fitzgerald is one of Jonathan Taylor’s biggest fans.

In fact, Northwestern’s coach said he feels Wisconsin’s All-American running back is the best player in the country.

“If I had a Heisman vote right now, he’s getting my vote,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s playing outstanding, absolutely outstanding, football. … JT’s been a great player since the minute he walked into this league, and he’s playing at as high of a level as any running back that I’ve seen in my time here.”

MADISON — Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor needed only a quarter Saturday to improve upon his rushing total from the Badgers' lopsided loss to Michigan last season.

Taylor ran for 203 yards and two touchdowns, Jack Coan added a career-high two rushing touchdowns and No. 13 Wisconsin made it look easy in a 35-14 victory over No. 11 Michigan.

MADISON — A new-look Wisconsin team will be set for Big Ten action when the 13th-ranked Badgers host No. 11 Michigan on Saturday.

Specifically, junior quarterback Jack Coan and wide receiver Quintez Cephus add a fresh dimension to Wisconsin’s arsenal compared to last season, when the Wolverines trounced the Badgers, 38-13, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Coan and Cephus didn’t play in the 2018 matchup and aim to make impacts this time around for the Badgers (2-0), who like the Wolverines (2-0), are fresh off a bye week.

MADISON — Fresh off winning its fifth NCAA title, the Wisconsin women's hockey team is picked to win its eight WCHA regular-season title, according to the league's annual preseason coaches' poll that was announced Wednesday.

The Badgers earned 36 points and six first-place votes, while Minnesota earned 31 points and the other first place vote. The two Border Battle rivals will rekindle their rivalry with a series on Nov. 2-3 in Minnesota and a series Jan. 24-25 in Madison.

No. 19 Wisconsin faces test from USF in season opener

TAMPA, Fla. — Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst likes the idea of a good early season test when the 19th-ranked Badgers visit South Florida.

The Badgers, who've played in the Big Ten championship game three of the past five years, entered last season with expectations of contending for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Instead, they slipped to 8-5 and failed to win 10 or more games for first time under Chryst.

Wisconsin officials: NCCA has cleared Cephus to play

MADISON — Wisconsin football officials say the NCAA has restored receiver Quintez Cephus’ eligibility following his sexual assault acquittal.

Cephus was suspended from the team in August 2018 after prosecutors charged him with sexually assaulting two women in his apartment the preceding April. The university expelled him earlier this year before he finished the spring semester.

Former Wisconsin receiver Quintez Cephus was cleared Monday to return to school after a jury acquitted him of sexual assault charges, though it was unclear when he will be eligible to play in a game.

The school announced Chancellor Rebecca Blank’s decision in a statement that said the university had obtained information that wasn’t provided during a student conduct review. The statement said sanctions against Cephus have been “reduced” and his expulsion had been lifted, though some conduct violations were upheld.
