Badger basketball's McGrory sidelined indefinitely following surgery

Wisconsin senior guard Walt McGrory underwent successful hip surgery and will be out for an indefinite period of time, as announced by the University of Wisconsin Sports Medicine staff on Tuesday.

McGrory has played in 36 career games for the Badgers, including 14 contests last season. The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native had a career day against McNeese State last year, playing a career high 24 minutes and finishing with 9 points, two assists and two rebounds in the win.

Wisconsin CB Wildgoose says he plans to enter NFL draft

Wisconsin cornerback Rachad Wildgoose is declaring for the NFL draft and isn’t expected to play in the Badgers’ remaining games this season.

Wildgoose announced his decision via Twitter on Friday. He injured his shoulder in the first half of a 17-7 loss at Northwestern last week and had his arm in a sling for the second half of the game.

In his tweet, Wildgoose said that “being a part of what I consider the greatest university in America has been the honor of my life.”

COVID-19 causes Gophers to cancel football game with Wisconsin

For the first time in 114 years, the Minnesota-Wisconsin game has been bumped off the schedule.

Minnesota called off its annual battle with Wisconsin for Paul Bunyan’s Axe — which was slated for Saturday afternoon — due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases within the program. The decision made Tuesday by Minnesota will also likely make the 18th-ranked Badgers ineligible for the Big Ten championship game, because of two earlier canceled games.

Ten scheduled games this week involving FBS teams have been postponed or canceled. The Minnesota-Wisconsin game won’t be made up.

Wisconsin men’s basketball team announces 2020-21 schedule

The Wisconsin men’s basketball program revealed its 2020-21 schedule, which includes 20 Big Ten Conference games announced by the league office Wednesday.

The Badgers are scheduled to tip off the season next Wednesday, Nov. 25, hosting Eastern Illinois at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin opens up Big Ten play at home on Dec. 21, hosting Nebraska in Madison.

Wisconsin men’s basketball head coach Greg Gard announced Wednesday that high school seniors Chucky Hepburn, Chris Hodges and Matthew Mors have signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Wisconsin.

The trio of ESPN four-star recruits will join the Badger men’s basketball roster beginning with the 2021-22 season.

Wisconsin football team routs Michigan to move to 2-0

Nakia Watson and Mason Stokke each scored two touchdowns in the first half, helping No. 13 Wisconsin build a big lead in a 49-11 rout of Michigan on Saturday night.

The Badgers (2-0) returned to competition after canceling two games of their all-Big Ten schedule due to a COVID-19 breakout within the program and didn't look rusty at all against a hapless team.

The Wolverines (1-3) fell behind 28-0 at halftime, their largest deficit at home since the Big House opened in 1927, and are off to their worst start since 1967.

Wisconsin begins this pandemic-delayed season with most of the same players who created so many memorable moments during a stirring stretch drive last year.

The seventh-ranked Badgers return nearly the entire nucleus that led them on an eight-game winning streak and a share of the Big Ten regular-season title before the coronavirus pandemic halted play in mid-March. This veteran group is old enough to realize that late-season surge has no bearing on what the Badgers want to accomplish this year.

Micah Potter proved his value from the moment he joined the Badgers active roster last season. Now heading into his first full season at Wisconsin, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is taking notice, naming the senior a candidate for the 2021 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award on Friday.

Potter is one of 20 watch list candidates, and one of five from the Big Ten, for the nation’s best center. The Mentor, Ohio native is Wisconsin’s third candidate for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award and first since Ethan Happ in 2019.

Wisconsin’s Reuvers named candidate for Karl Malone Award

Badger big man Nate Reuvers has become a big-time contributor for Wisconsin. Entering the 2020-21 season, the senior is garnering big-time recognition and was named a candidate for the 2021 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday.

Reuvers is one of 20 watch list candidates — one of three from the Big Ten — for the nation’s best power forward. He becomes the second Badger to be named a candidate for the Karl Malone Award, joining Nigel Hayes (2017).

Wisconsin football game vs. Purdue canceled

The Wisconsin football team’s home game against Purdue on Saturday will not be played and team-related activities remain paused indefinitely, UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez announced Tuesday.

Saturday’s game will not be rescheduled.
