Leonhard says he has ‘unfinished business’ at Wisconsin

Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard says he has unfinished business at his alma mater and wouldn’t have felt right leaving after a pandemic-shortened season, even for an opportunity as tempting as his home state’s NFL team.

Leonhard was a prime candidate for the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator position and had been offered the job according to multiple reports, but opted to return for a sixth season on Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst’s staff. The Packers instead hired Joe Barry as defensive coordinator.

Wisconsin hires Marisa Moseley as women’s basketball coach

Wisconsin hired Boston University’s Marisa Moseley as women’s basketball coach as the Badgers attempt to rejuvenate a program that hasn’t produced a winning season in a decade.

Moseley was 45-29 at Boston University after working as an assistant on UConn coach Geno Auriemma’s staff during five of the Huskies’ national championship seasons (2010, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016).

She takes over for Jonathan Tsipis, who was fired after Wisconsin’s first-round loss in the Big Ten Tournament. Tsipis went 50-99 in five seasons, including a 16-74 mark in Big Ten competition.

Wisconsin hires ex-Cowboys assistant Gary Brown to coach RBs

Former Dallas Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown is returning to football after a one-year, health-related absence and taking the same position at Wisconsin.

Wisconsin announced the hire March 25.

Brown coached Cowboys running backs from 2013-19 while working on a staff headed by Jason Garrett, who was forced out after the 2019 season. Brown spent 2020 out of coaching while he battled cancer.

He now moves into the college ranks and takes over for John Settle, who left to become Kentucky’s running backs coach.

Wisconsin men's basketball team eliminated by Baylor

The Wisconsin men's basketball team was unable to rally from an 18-point deficit in a 76-63 second round NCAA Tournament loss to top-seeded Baylor on March 21 in Indianapolis.

The ninth-seeded Badgers turned the ball over 14 times in the contest, most of which came in the first half. Wisconsin trailed 42-29 at halftime and then was down by 18 points early in the second half.

The Badgers were able to cut the deficit to seven a couple times, but eventually ran out of time.

Watts scores in OT, Wisconsin wins women's hockey title

Daryl Watts scored a remarkable goal 3 minutes, 16 seconds into overtime, giving Wisconsin a record-tying sixth national title with a 2-1 victory over Northeastern in the women's Frozen Four championship game on March 20 in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Watts had the puck behind the Northwestern net when Husky defenseman Megan Carter turned her back. Watts, the leading scorer in the country, intentionally banked the puck off Carter's back and it deflected by goalie Aerin Frankel.

Wisconsin men's basketball team rolls past UNC in opening round

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team dominated from start to finish in an 85-62 NCAA tournament opening round win over North Carolina on March 19 in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The ninth-seeded Badgers were led on offense by guards Brad Davison and D’Mitrik Trice. Davison made five 3-pointers and 10 of his 15 shots in a 29-point outburst. Trice converted eight of his 15 shots to add 21 points.

Against a taller and more athletic eighth-seeded North Carolina front line, the Badgers actually controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Tar Heels 37-34.

Wisconsin women's hockey team advances to 7th straight Frozen Four

The No. 2 Wisconsin women’s hockey team blanked Providence, 3-0, in an NCAA quarterfinal on March 16 to advance to the NCAA Frozen Four for the seventh-straight season.

Thanks to the win over the Friars (12-8-1), the Badgers (15-3-1) now hold the longest Frozen Four appearance streak in women’s college hockey history.

Wisconsin men in NCAA Tournament as 9 seed

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team received the No. 9 seed in the South Region and will face 8-seeded North Carolina in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament on March 19 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The game will tip at 6:10 p.m. and be broadcast on CBS.

The Badgers are making their 25th trip to the Big Dance overall and are one of five schools to appear in 21 of the last 22 NCAA tournaments.

Wisconsin men's basketball team eliminated from Big Ten Tournament

The Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball team couldn't hold on to a six-point halftime lead in an eventual 62-57 loss to Iowa in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal game on March 12 in Indianapolis.

Wisconsin was outscored 36-25 in the second half.

D'Mitrik Trice scored 19 points to pace Wisconsin, while Micah Potter posted 17 points off the bench. Brad Davison chipped in 10 points.

Wisconsin turned the ball over 14 times. Iowa finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds and just eight turnovers.

Wisconsin men's basketball team escapes with win over Penn State

Aleem Ford scored 17 points and No. 6 seed Wisconsin made a stop on the last play to escape with a 75-74 win over No. 11 seed Penn State in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on March 11.

The Badgers (17-11 overall) led by 18 in the final eight minutes and were up 73-57 with five minutes to go.

The Nittany Lions (11-14) ended the game on a 17-2 run with Sam Sessoms scoring 13 of his 18 points during the final seven minutes to spark the rally.
