New Wolf River Dental facility gets council approval

Plans to build a new dental facility on Engel Drive are not only interesting for the city of Shawano, but local schoolchildren, as well.

The Shawano Common Council approved a development agreement Jan. 10 with Destiny Unbound LLC to build a new facility for Wolf River Dental, which currently operates out of Woodlawn Plaza. Destiny agrees to acquire 2.6 acres of land owned by the city to build the new dental clinic.

Only 1 competitive race on spring ballot for council

Most incumbents of the Shawano Common Council and Shawano School Board are expected to have an easy time staying in office with no official opposition.

There is one exception, however. John Hoeffs, the alderman for Shawano’s sixth district, will be squaring off in April with Brian Suprise to keep his seat on the council.

Hoffman not running for 4th term on council

There will be at least one new face on the Shawano Common Council in 2024 as the new election season starts to take form.

Lisa Hoffman, who represents the fourth aldermanic district, will not be running for a new term. She has filed papers of non-candidacy, and it was announced by City Clerk Lesley Nemetz at the Nov. 13 council meeting.

Hoffman declined to comment on why she is not running for another term. She was first elected to the council in 2017 and is currently serving as council president.

Council approves $15.56M budget for 2024

The Shawano Common Council signed off on a $15.56 million budget for 2024 on Nov. 15 where taxes are expected to drop for most property owners.

“We can continue the goals that you set for us, which is to continue to provide cost-effective services to our residents the best possible way that we can,” said City Administrator Eddie Sheppard to the council. “I think the budget we’re bringing forth tonight is in line with those goals.”

Truck route policy updated for co-op’s new areas

The Shawano Common Council amended the city’s heavy truck routes code Oct. 11 to include two segments of road near United Cooperative.

United Cooperative has recently changed its truck entrance and exit area, putting it on Center Street. Previously, large trucks had entered and exited onto Green Bay Street, which was more hazardous due to the heavier flow of traffic on the main Shawano artery.

Wasps to be released in industrial park

The emerald ash borer is devastating ash trees all across the Midwest, but the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is using parasitic wasps to fight back.

The Shawano Common Council gave the go-ahead Aug. 9 for the DNR to coordinate the wasps’ release in an area of the industrial park to combat the ash borer. The wasps are not expected to save the trees that are already infested but can potentially prolong their life.

City council green lights housing project

The Shawano Common Council approved a $750,000 loan from funding for Tax Increment Fund District 7 to help build 31 lots just south of Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College’s Shawano campus.

Kolby Construction, based in Birnamwood, is expected to purchase 31.25 acres by Aug. 15 and develop the lots within the next two years, which includes paying for roads, utilities and other necessary infrastructure. The total cost for this project is expected to be more than $2.2 million, so Kolby Muscha, owner for the company, asked the city to help offset some of those costs.

Conditional use permit approved for Engel Drive apartments

SHAWANO —The Shawano Common Council last week approved a conditional use permit clearing the way for a 200-unit apartment complex on Engel Drive.

The permit was the last step in the process for construction to begin this fall.

SC Swiderski LLC, of Mosinee, began working with the city last year on the project, which initially wasn’t expected to get underway until 2021 at the soonest.

Swiderski moved the project up, citing the strong demand for housing in the area and the city’s cooperation in moving the process forward.

Engel Drive apartments get approval

The Shawano Common Council last week approved a development agreement for an apartment complex to be located in the industrial park on Engel Drive.

SC Swiderski, of Mosinee, is planning an apartment development that would include a minimum of 160 units and as many as 224 units that would be completed in stages over the next five years.

The development agreement calls for SC Swiderski to purchase the 18.6 acres from the city for $450,000.
