Shawano landfill reopened

SHAWANO — The Shawano landfill was open for business again Tuesday, two weeks after a hauler damaged a structural beam supporting the garbage and recycling transfer station.

City staff had expected the repairs to take at least five weeks, but moved along faster than expected after Chuck Felts of Felts Construction in Shawano reached out to his contacts with Boldt Construction in Madison.

After some repairs, a structural engineer inspected the facility and determined that it is safe for operations, according to a statement from the city.

Girls Golf: Johnson helps Hawks take third at home meet

Despite another strong effort from Taylor Johnson, the Shawano Community High School girls golf team had to settle for third place at a Bay Conference meet at Shawano Lake Golf Course on Thursday.

Johnson shot a round of 46 on the front nine to take second place individually. The junior was coming off a first-place effort Tuesday.

Johnson finished with two pars on the day and finished behind only Xavier’s Lauren Haen (41).

Shawano boys soccer team hopes to blend youth with returning talent

SHAWANO — Area high school boys soccer teams endured tough 2018 seasons on the field but are determined to turn things around this fall.

Shawano will try to mix in some talented underclassmen to an experienced core of returning players, while Gresham/Bowler has big aspirations with a strong core of returning players.

While Shawano lost several seniors from last year’s team, coach Rob Croschere believes the group can still be successful with the returning talent it has.

Girls Tennis: Shawano goes 2-1 on second day of invite

Shawano capped a strong showing at the Battle on the Fox Invitational, winning two of its three matches Tuesday at Bay Port High School. The Hawks went 5-1 overall at the two-day invitational.

Shawano topped Green Bay West and Howards Grove to finish atop the invitational's Treasure Division. It marked the first time Shawano won its division at the annual invitational.

The Hawks fell just short in a cross-division clash with Kenosha St. Joseph to end the day.

Girls Golf: Shawano's Johnson earns top score at conference meet

Shawano's Taylor Johnson shot a nine-hole round of 47 to earn the top individual score and medalist honor at Cherry Hills Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday.

"I started off with a par today and that’s always huge for my confidence going forward with the meet, and as the day continued I just kept thinking about the next shot," said Johnson. "I was really dialed in to every single shot I took. Other than that, my putting has improved since the beginning of the season which has helped drop my score."

Shawano/Bonduel girls swim team striving for better finish in Bay

SHAWANO — The Shawano/Bonduel co-op and Clintonville girls swim teams head into the fall season with improvement on their minds and new coaches at the helm.

Both teams will hit the water for their first meets later this week.

Gina Monfils is the team’s new coach, and she hopes to lead the team to more success within the Bay Conference.

The Shawano Community High School girls tennis team got its fall season off to a good start by winning all three of its matches at the Battle on the Fox Invitational at Bay Port High School on Monday.

Shawano opened the day edging Bay Port 4-3 before 5-1 wins over Green Bay East and Marinette.

Isabella Buettner earned a pair of wins in No. 1 singles play. The No. 1 doubles team of Lydia Dobberstein and Grace Licausi earned two victories in No. 1 doubles action.

5 arrested in 2 city drug busts

SHAWANO — Authorities arrested two people in Shawano early Thursday on multiple drug charges, including distributing meth and running a drug house, only 12 hours after executing another drug search warrant in the city that netted three arrests.

The two incidents marked the third and fourth major drug bust incidents in Shawano County in three weeks.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, Shawano police, assisted by the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, executed a drug search warrant in the 800 block of South River Street.

Girls Golf: Shawano takes 12th at invite

The Shawano girls golf team earned a team score of 450 to place 12th at the 16-team Thunder Invite at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour on Friday.

Taylor Johnson and Kiley Rusch each posted 18-hole rounds of 102 to lead Shawano on the course.

Macie Herm shot a 116, while Georgia Eggert (130) and Emily Heling (137) capped the five-golfer team.

Teen faces hate crime charges for vandalism incidents

SHAWANO — A Shawano teen already charged with auto theft and vandalism has also been charged with hate crimes for graffiti painted on two Shawano schools.

The graffiti found at Shawano Community Middle School July 22 and Shawano Community High School Aug. 7 included obscene images, racial slurs, a swastika and a reference to “88,” which in some circles stands for “Heil Hitler,” according to the criminal complaint.

Payton M. Pagel, 18, is charged with three counts of criminal damage to property and three counts of making lewd, obscene or indecent drawings.
