Almost half of SCHS involved in athletics

Shawano Community High School’s athletic programs might not be bringing home too many state trophies, but there’s plenty for them to be proud of, according to a report presented Aug. 12 to the Shawano School Board.

Out of 752 enrolled students in the last school year, 339 of them were involved with one or more programs, which is about 45.1% of the entire student body, with 105 playing in two sports and 65 playing in three. According to Joel Wondra, district activities director, the total participation numbers are up 6.63% over the 2022-23 school year.

New clothing store offers ‘sassy’ selection

Each of the new stores in the revitalized Shawano downtown shopping district brings something new and unique to the area.

One of the newest women’s boutiques, Simply Sassy Clothing Co., is no exception. Owner Cari Kretschmann, of Shawano, has a directed vision for her store, which opened the first weekend in June.

“Sassy” is the nickname she got from her father, Bill Arneson, who lives in Cornell, where Kretschmann grew up. The store’s name, Simply Sassy, describes herself and her store.

SPEEDWAY: Shawano’s Bartz, Teske take checkered flags

In the IMCA modifiers feature at the Shawano Speedway on July 27, Shawano’s Jordan Bartz moved up from starting 10th to take the checkered flag. Tigerton’s Wyatt Block, who started one spot in front of Bartz, finished one spot behind at the end.

Seymour’s Chuck Carmin placed third.

Wausau’s Kevin Feck won the first heat after starting in third place. He was followed by Green Valley’s Adam Jacobson in second and Bartz in third.

Heat 2 was won by Cody Hokenstad. Block finished in second, with Wausau’s Marcus Yarie in third.

J-turn project on state Highway 29 underway

Crews have begun the reconstruction of the intersection of state Highway 29 and County Road MMM west of Shawano.

A J-turn intersection, what the Wisconsin Department of Transportation calls a restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT) is being installed to improve safety.

School board trimming proposed referendum

Fine tuning continued during a July 22 work session at which the Shawano School Board examined its proposed November referendum that it plans to decide on Aug. 12.

Dreier Pharmacy named nation’s best

Dreier Pharmacy was recently named the nation’s best during a national conference of independent pharmacies, and now the country knows what generations of Shawano area residents have known for decades.

Of nearly 4,500 independent pharmacies across the nation that are members of Health Mart, Dreier Pharmacy earned the Health Mart Pharmacy of the Year award for 2024.

“Those businesses that satisfy the needs and wants of their customers the best, those are the ones that are going to succeed,” customer John Knickerbocker said. “Dreier Pharmacy is a model of that.”

Men’s recovery residence opens in Shawano

A new men’s recovery residence opened last month in Shawano, and Charley Estep is truly grateful for it.

“There is no place better for an addict in early recovery,” he said. “The house and the people that run this program (are) nothing short of amazing.”

Estep, 39, is originally from Virginia but has been in Wisconsin the better part of the past 13 years. He is one of five residents at the house, 822 W. Picnic St.

Like the women’s recovery home that opened earlier in spring, this home is operated by the Shawano Menominee Resiliency Coalition.

SHAWANO SPEEDWAY: Local racers win big at Speedway

Shawano racers won four of the five feature races at the Shawano Speedway on July 6.

Tommy Rindt started in seventh place in the IMCA sport modifiers feature and moved all the way to the top spot. Oconto Falls’ Cole Magnin started one place in front of Rindt but ended one spot behind in second when the checkered flag flew.

In the first heat, Shannon Fandrey of Birnamwood had the pole and stayed with it to the end for the win. Magnin again placed second after moving up five spots from his place in the starting grid.

SHAWANO SPEEDWAY: More than $14,000 raised at Racing for a Reason

Shawano Speedway’s Racing for a Reason fundraiser June 29 collected $14,217. The funds will be presented to HSHS St. Vincent’s Child Life Services on July 20.

The races that night were an extra blessing as it was the first the cars were on the track after being rained out three weeks in a row.

SMU building finished ahead of schedule

The new Shawano Municipal Utilities building at the corner of East Green Bay Street and North Sawyer Street has been completed weeks ahead of schedule, thanks to a mild winter, which allowed SMU employees to come back home sooner.

Since August 2023, SMU has been renting office space from its neighbors at GenEx. Work has gone full speed ahead while the 29,000-square-foot building was put together. Talk about a new building started back in 2017 but really moved forward in earnest in 2021.
