No area swimmers qualify for state

No boys swimmers from Pulaski or Shawano were able to qualify for state during sectional competitions on Feb. 11.

Pulaski swam in the Division 1 Neenah Sectional, accumulating 100 points to place 11th. Shawano earned 104 points and took ninth at the Division 2 Ashwaubenon Sectional.

Pulaski's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jace Olson, Charlie Duffrin, Carter Grasse and Patrick Lara earned a seventh-place finish in 1 minute, 37.68 seconds. The same four formed the eighth-place finishing 400 freestyle relay (3:37.56).

47 individual boys wrestlers qualify for sectionals

Forty-seven area high school wrestlers earned big wins to place in the top four at regionals on Feb. 11 and earn spots at sectionals.

Pulaski and Wittenberg-Birnamwood placed second as teams at their regionals to qualify for team sectionals.

Division 1

Pulaski and Shawano each competed at the Green Bay West Regional in Green Bay.

Thirteen Pulaski wrestlers placed in the top four to advance as individuals. The team earned 248½ points to finish behind only Bay Port’s 275½ points.

Pulaski boys basketball team cruises to nonconference win

The Pulaski High School boys basketball team eased its way to an 81-63 nonconference win over Marinette on Feb. 10 in Pulaski.

It was already a special night in Pulaski as senior Derek Shaw was honored for recently going over the 1,000-point milestone in his high school career, while the 2013 state championship was recognized on its 10-year anniversary.

New-look wrestling postseason ahead as girls join mix

The postseason has arrived for high school wrestlers.

After girls wrestling held its inaugural state tournament in 2022 at the La Crosse Center, the girls will get to showcase their talents at state this winter at the Kohl Center alongside the boys. With the state tournament now including boys and girls wrestling, the postseason has a new look, and here’s a quick look at some of the proceedings.

The Ashwaubenon boys hockey team is enjoying another strong season on the ice. Lincoln Simons, a senior goalie from Pulaski, is a big reason behind the team’s success, and has become one of the best goalies in the entire state.

Simons landed on the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association all-state honorable mention team in his junior season, and hopes to improve on that status by the end of this season.

The Pulaski High School wrestling team has been one of the top-ranked Division 1 teams over the past couple years. Trenton Gibbons, now a senior, is one of the wrestlers who has led the charge for the Red Raiders over that span.

Gibbons is a perfect 5-0 in Fox River Classic Conference matches this winter after landing on the all-conference first team last year. To cap his junior season, Gibbons placed second in the Division 1 182-pound weight class at state.

Shawano boys 8th, Oconto Falls 11th at wrestling invitational

Area wrestling teams and individuals turned in strong results across the state on Jan. 21.

Shawano and Oconto Falls sent boys teams to Sheboygan for the Herb Tyler Invitational. The Hawks took eighth place, while Oconto Falls was 11th.

Bonduel, Pulaski, Suring/Gillett and Oconto Falls all had girls place at the Wisconsin Challenge Series in Wausau.

The Shawano boys accumulated 95 points to earn its eighth-place finish at the Herb Tyler Invitational.

Athlete Profile: Ella Wiese

Senior Ella Wiese is wrapping up a strong high school basketball career at Pulaski High School and serving as a leader for the team this winter.

While the team has struggled to rack up many wins, Wiese has been one of the team’s top scoring threats and also helps out in every other aspect of the game.

Wiese is coming off a junior season in which she made the Fox River Classic Conference honorable mention team.

Whiting’s 4th title the top area sports story

The past year has produced plenty of memorable sports accomplishments.

There were impressive individual moments, like Oconto Falls’ Clayton Whiting winning his fourth state title, which was unanimously voted the top sports story of 2022. Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Reese Rogowski and Pulaski’s Taya Schmidt, along with several area wrestlers, also had strong state showings to earn spots among the top-10 stories.

Pulaski boys soccer team earns WIAA/Rural Insurance Sportsmanship Award

The Pulaski High School boys soccer team earned the Sportsmanship Award for the 2022 fall state tournament.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, in cooperation with Rural Mutual Insurance Co., revealed the team winners on Dec. 20.

The WIAA/Rural Insurance Sportsmanship Award is presented to one school program and community – or communities in the case of cooperative programs – in each of the state team tournaments that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship.
