New home, name change celebrated

The former Hammerbeck Dental Office in Pulaski pulled out all the stops Aug. 17 for its grand opening event, celebrating construction of its new building at 985 Corporate Way and the business’ name change to Pulaski Dental.

Several hundred people attended to tour the facility, listen to the music and enjoy free food and drink under a big tent in the parking lot.

Dr. Adam Hammerbeck and his colleague, Dr. Shayna Zalec, moved into the new building in mid-July, less than nine months after a splashy groundbreaking event last Oct. 20.

It has been a long time since the Chargers had a week one performance like last week, but after rolling Antigo 56-7 to open up their 2023 season, you have to wonder how good this team can be.

The Chargers scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and another three in the second quarter to lead 42-0 at the half. Wittenberg-Birnamwwood scored another TD in each of the third and fourth quarters, while the Red Robins’ only score came in the fourth quarter.

Noriega-Avila trial experiences delay

The trial of a Pulaski man accused of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter was due to start Aug. 15 but will be delayed indefinitely after his attorney withdrew from the case.

Sara Stertz, the attorney representing Pedro Noriega-Avila, requested Aug. 14 to have her client represented by someone else due to her being in the late term of pregnancy. The trial was expected to last four days, and Stertz told the court she believed she could not endure the strenuous pace of a case for that long due to her condition.

PSC approves Pulaski water main project

State utility regulators have approved a village of Pulaski request to extend a water main into the town of Angelica to serve an expanding John Deere dealership.

The 8-inch main would extend less than a mile up state Highway 32 to the Riesterer and Schnell John Deere dealership, which is building a large sales and service building and needs more water to adequate fire protection, according to documents filed with the Wisconsin Public Service Commission.

Matt Smith hired as Pulaski High School principal

Matt Smith is the new principal at Pulaski High School.

“We are delighted that Matt has joined our team of learning leaders,” said Pulaski Community School District Superintendent Allison Space. “From his experiences, his systems thinking will definitely be a benefit to our high school staff and students. Matt is already digging into the work by meeting with his team at the high school.”

Pulaski sees Legion season end at AA State

After seven weeks of American Legion baseball this summer, the Pulaski Legion squad saw its season come to an end at the AA State tournament in Ashwaubenon. Pulaski went 0-2 during the weekend.

In its first game, Pulaski played Region 1 winner River Falls. Despite River Falls taking the victory 11-1, this game was much closer than it seemed as a series of errors led to countless unearned runs that ultimately doomed Pulaski in the end.

Despite the 16U and 17U tournaments taking place over the weekend, you also had varsity Legion regionals getting underway as a trio of local teams aimed to continue their season for at least one more week. Not all of the results were the best, but there were some great showings including in AA where Pulaski punched their ticket to the state tournament next weekend in Ashwaubenon following a pair of impressive games Saturday.

Big innings loom large in Pulaski’s loss to Denmark

If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, and Denmark has been the best for the past three seasons. Despite an overall great effort from the Pulaski Legion team, it was a pair of three-run innings that did them in as Denmark came to town and picked up the 7-1 win July 11.

Zierdan’s complete game gives Shawano win

With the American Legion Regional tournament just around the corner, teams want to be playing their best ball in an effort to advance to the state tournament.

That is no different for Shawano and Pulaski whose summer seasons haven’t gone as planned thus far. With fewer than five combined wins between the two of them, it was Shawano getting back on track as Alex Zierdan tossed a four-hit shutout to lead the way for a 10-0 win July 6.

Witt-Birn’s Waupekenay tosses no-hitter against Pulaski

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood Legion baseball team broke a five-game losing streak when Nathan Waupekenay threw a no-hitter in a 5-1 victory over Pulaski on June 28 in Wittenberg.

Waupekenay made quick work of the Pulaski offense, striking out nine and walking two across seven innings.
