Walleye tournament draws 107 teams

The National Walleye Tour stopped in Oconto on June 20-21 to fish the waters of the bay of Green Bay.

A total of 107 two-person teams registered for the two-day, catch-and-release tournament, according to Jayme Sellen, executive director of the Tourism and Economic Development Corporation for the Oconto Region (TEDCOR).

Attracting fishing tourneys to the area has been one of TEDCOR’s tourism initiatives for several years. Oconto hosted last year’s championship tournament.

Copperfest kickoff banquet to honor grand marshal

This year’s Kickoff to Copperfest Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 6 at the Oconto Elks Club, 310 Farnsworth Ave., Oconto.

Copperfest grand marshal Dee Donlevy will be honored at the banquet and new this year will be the coronation of Miss Copperfest 2024.

Advanced reservations are being accepted through May 30 by calling 920-835-2647. Cost will be $20 per person.

Panetti and Martin in rematch for Oconto mayor

The race for mayor of Oconto is a rematch of the contest that John Panetti won in 2022. In addition, there are eight candidates on the ballot for four positions on the Oconto City Council.

After a primary election pared down the field of 11 candidates, voters will choose April 2 from among Darrell Anderson, Kim Bronikowski, Dee Donlevy, Mike Feldt, Casey Sowle, Lori Stensrup, Jamie Younger and Dan Zoeller.

Oconto lynching to be discussed at program

The Oconto County Historical Society will be discussing a lynching in Oconto when it presents its monthly speaker series program at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4 in the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum meeting room, 915 Park Ave., Oconto.

Back in the dim history of Oconto, when the now peaceful city was a booming lumber town, there hangs a tale of lynching a murderer on the courthouse lawn on May 2, 1871.

City attorney charged after shooting mishap

The longtime Oconto city attorney faces charges apparently stemming from an errant bullet that struck a nearby house while he was target practicing, causing minor injuries to two people.

Frank M. Calvert, 61, of Oconto, has been charged with two counts of recklessly endangering safety, in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred Nov. 23.

According to the criminal complaint, deputies were called after a .223-caliber bullet came through a kitchen window at a residence on County Road J in the Town of Oconto.

Twin Brother’s Supper Club opening in Oconto

The Oconto Area Chamber of Commerce has announce the Twin Brother’s Supper Club, 553 Jefferson St., Oconto, will open Dec. 13.

Owned by brothers Humberto and Santiago Morales, this new supper club will be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Breakfast and lunch will be served from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by dinner at 4 p.m.

Governor comes to Oconto to celebrate business

Gov. Tony Evers took a walking tour of downtown Oconto on Nov. 21 to highlight the Shop Small Wisconsin initiative.

Evers visited six small businesses, starting with The Shop on Main, then going on to Creative Ewe, Roberts Hometown Hardware, The Candy Shop, Secret Garden Floral Design, and ending with a visit to Eyeconic.

Several of the businesses were recipients of the Main Street Bounceback program, which provided grants of up to $10,000 that have helped more than 9,400 small businesses expand or move into storefronts in all 72 counties across the state.

Potter’s Field stories part of speaker’s series

Pete Gabrielson, a member of the Oconto County Historical Society, will present a program Dec. 7 as he uncovers the diverse and captivating life stories of individuals laid to rest in Potter’s Field at Oconto Evergreen Cemetery.

The historical society will present its monthly Speaker Series Program at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Beyer Home and Carriage House Museum, 915 Park Ave., Oconto.

Some services operating again at HSHS, Prevea

Officials with Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin, including the hospital in Oconto Falls, and Prevea Health clinics in Shawano and Oconto counties continue to work to correct the systemwide outage that has plagued the medical providers since Aug. 27.

Harvest Fest celebration coming to Oconto

Oconto’s downtown will spring to life for Harvest Fest, the city’s annual autumn celebration, taking place Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Harvest Fest is located on Main Street from Michigan Avenue to Millidge Avenue. Admission is free. On the long-anticipated day of Harvest Fest every year, Oconto closes Main Street to vehicles but opens the street to vendors and foot traffic.
