Without Giannis, Bucks beat Hawks to take 3-2 series lead

Brook Lopez scored a playoff career-high 33 points and the Milwaukee Bucks withstood Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence to beat the Atlanta Hawks 123-112 on July 1 for a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Bucks are one win away from reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. They won their lone NBA title in 1971.

Four of their starters had at least 22 points: Lopez, Khris Middleton (26), Jrue Holiday (25) and Bobby Portis (22). Middleton also had 13 rebounds and eight assists. Holiday had 13 assists and six rebounds.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is doubtful for game five of the Eastern Conference Finals on July 1 after undergoing an MRI on his injured left knee.

Bucks officials said the two-time MVP hyperextended his left knee in the third quarter of a 110-88 game four loss to the Atlanta Hawks on June 29. The Bucks announced Wednesday that an MRI confirmed that diagnosis and said he'd be listed as doubtful for Thursday's game.

“We’ll just take it day by day and see how he’s doing," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said.

The Milwaukee Bucks suddenly are facing the daunting challenge of possibly having to move forward in their Eastern Conference Finals series without their two-time MVP.

Giannis Antetokounmpo sustained a hyperextension of his left knee and and was forced out of the Bucks’ game against the Atlanta Hawks on June 29.

“It’s not good,” Bucks forward P.J. Tucker said. “It’s not good losing anybody on your team and losing your best player stinks.”

The Atlanta Hawks proved they are more than a one-man team.

Now, it's the Milwaukee Bucks who may have to show they can get by without the Greek Freak.

With Trae Young sidelined by an unusual injury, Lou Williams and a host of Hawks stepped up to fill the void, leading Atlanta to a 110-88 rout of the Bucks in game four to even the Eastern Conference Finals on June 29.

“A total team effort,” Hawks coach Nate McMillan said.

Khris Middleton and Giannis Antetokounmpo combined for 71 points to help lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 113-102 victory over the Atlanta Hawks in game three of the Eastern Conference Finals on June 27 in Atlanta.

With the win, the Bucks took a 2-1 lead in the series. Game four is June 29 in Atlanta.

Middleton scored 20 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter, when Milwaukee outscored Atlanta 30-17. Middleton also had 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Antetokounmpo posted 33 points and 11 rebounds and was an efficient 13 of 21 from the floor.

The Milwaukee Bucks withstood Kevin Durant’s NBA-record 48 points in a game seven, advancing to the Eastern Conference finals by beating the Brooklyn Nets 115-111 in overtime June 19.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 40 points and 13 rebounds, and Khris Middleton made the tiebreaking shot with 40 seconds left in the first overtime game seven in 15 years.

The Bucks held on from there when Durant missed two jumpers, the last an airball with 0.3 seconds remaining.

Bucks bounce back, defeat Nets to force game 7

Khris Middleton scored 38 points, Giannis Antetokounmpo added 30 and the Milwaukee Bucks never trailed in a 104-89 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on June 17 to force a decisive seventh game in their second-round playoff series.

Game seven will be June 19 in Brooklyn. The home team has won each of the first six games in this series.

Milwaukee never trailed and broke the game open by going on a 14-0 run that started with less than 8 ½ minutes left.

Bucks tie series after game 4 win as Nets lose Irving

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton finally are getting a little more help, while Kevin Durant keeps seeing his superstar cohorts get hurt.

And now a second-round playoff series that once looked like a Brooklyn Nets runaway suddenly is up for grabs.

Antetokounmpo scored 34 points and the Bucks rolled to a 107-96 game four victory on June 13 to tie their series with the Nets, who lost Kyrie Irving to a sprained right ankle.

The Bucks erased a 2-0 deficit by winning two straight in Milwaukee. Game five is June 15 at Brooklyn.

Jrue Holiday figured the Brooklyn Nets expected him to call a timeout as soon as he got the ball with his team trailing by one in the final minute.

Instead, Holiday delivered just in time to keep the Milwaukee Bucks from falling into a hole from which no NBA team has ever recovered.

His driving layup with 11.4 seconds left put the Bucks ahead for good and they held on for an 86-83 victory June 10 that cut Brooklyn's lead to 2-1 in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Milwaukee Bucks were dismantled 125-86 by the Brooklyn Nets in the second game of the team’s Eastern Conference semifinal matchup on June 7 in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn shot 52% from the floor and knocked down 21 2-pointers. The Nets turned the ball over just eight times.

Milwaukee shot 44% from the field, but only made eight 3-pointers while turning the ball over 16 times.

Brooklyn led 36-19 after a quarter and eventually went up 49 points. Milwaukee never led in the contest.
