Brewers promote Matt Arnold to senior VP and general manager

The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted Matt Arnold to senior vice president and general manager.

Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns announced the move Nov. 19 and said it “formalizes how we have operated over the last few years.” Stearns previously held the title president of baseball operations and general manager.

Right-handed reliever Devin Williams was voted 2020 National League Rookie of the Year, edging Phillies infielder Alec Bohm and Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth.

The announcement was made Monday by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Williams becomes the third player in franchise history to earn Rookie of the Year honors, joining shortstop Pat Listach (1992) and third baseman Ryan Braun (2007).

Sedar moving to advisory role on Brewers’ coaching staff

After working as a Milwaukee Brewers first-base or third-base coach for the last 14 seasons, Ed Sedar is moving into a new role as an adviser to the team’s coaching staff.

That move marked the biggest change as the Brewers announced manager Craig Counsell’s 2021 coaching staff Wednesday.

Sedar had been the Brewers’ first-base coach from 2007-10 and third-base coach from 2011-20. He also has worked in the Brewers organization as a minor league outfield and baserunning coordinator (1992-2006) and minor league field coordinator (2002-06).

Healy goes free, refuses assignment to minors from Brewers

Infielder Ryon Healy has opted for free agency, refusing an outright assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers off their 40-man roster to their Triple-A affiliate at San Antonio.

The 28-year-old played just four regular-season games for Milwaukee this year and batted .143 with no homers, runs or RBIs. He started the second game of the Brewers’ NL wild-card series loss to Los Angeles and went 0 for 3.

Brewers decline 2021 options on Gyorko, Sogard, Gamel

The Milwaukee Brewers have declined 2021 options on infielders Jedd Gyorko and Eric Sogard as well as outfielder Ben Gamel.

Gyorko and Sogard each had $4.5 million options and now instead become eligible for free agency. Gyorko gets a $1 million buyout and Sogard $500,000.

The Milwaukee Brewers have declined to exercise a $15 million mutual 2021 option on veteran outfielder Ryan Braun as the franchise’s career home run leader ponders whether to continue playing.

Braun is due a $4 million buyout.

The 37-year-old often said this year that this might be his final season. He has spent his entire career in Milwaukee and has a franchise-record 352 career home runs.

The hitting struggles that hampered the Milwaukee Brewers throughout the pandemic-shortened regular season proved fatal in the playoffs.

With a roster decimated by injuries, the Brewers totaled two runs while getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a best-of-3 NL wild card series. They got eliminated while striking out 13 times and mustering just four hits in a 3-0 loss on Thursday night.

The Brewers ranked 26th among the 30 teams in batting average (.223) and 27th in runs per game (4.1). Milwaukee batters struck out 582 times for MLB’s second-highest total.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' powerful lineup went mostly quiet against the Milwaukee Brewers. Still, baseball's best team in the regular season generated just enough offense and got plenty of help from the opposing pitcher.

Mookie Betts had two hits and an RBI and Corey Seager homered in the Dodgers' 4-2 victory in the opener of their NL playoff Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Losses by the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants helped the Brewers earn the No. 8 seed in the playoffs. Milwaukee will take on the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers in a best-of-3 series that starts Wednesday.
