Menominee Reservation survey to assess economic conditions

An economic assessment of the Menominee Indian Reservation is the subject of an online survey that will continue to seek input through Sept. 30.

The assessment is based on ongoing progress from the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin strategic plan, specifically the economic chapter.

This survey will collect community input to previous studies and strategic directions as well as assess the current economic conditions.

Five arrested in drug sweep on Menominee reservation

Charges were pending against five people after a drug bust May 17 on the Menominee Indian Reservation.

According to a news release posted on social media by the Menominee Tribal Police Department, three simultaneous search warrants were executed in the villages of Keshena and Neopit and the Southeast Bass Lake region.

The warrants were issued after an ongoing investigation identified several suspects as coordinating efforts to sell illegal drugs throughout the reservation, the release said.

Two indicted for crimes on Menominee Indian Reservation

Two men were recently indicted in federal court, one for alleged theft, and a second for drug offenses on the Menominee Indian Reservation.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office:

Merwin J. “Pete” Wynos Jr, 35, of Keshena, was charged with theft in Indian Country for allegedly stealing property valued in excess of $1,000 from four companies at a construction site on the reservation.

The alleged theft occurred on or about Sept. 25, 2023.

Menominee tribe establishes 10 p.m. curfew for two months

KESHENA — A curfew is in effect for the Menominee Indian Reservation for 60 days as the tribe hopes to further restrict the spread of the coronavirus.

The Menominee Tribal Legislature unanimously approved the measure at a meeting on April 6 and set it to go into effect immediately. The curfew begins at 10 p.m. and is in place through 6 a.m.

Frechette gets 2½ years for manslaughter

GREEN BAY — A Keshena man charged in federal court with second-degree murder for giving a Fentanyl pill to a man who fatally overdosed, was sentenced Jan. 17 to 2½ years in prison and three years’ supervised release.

Ronald J. Frechette Jr., 39, faced a 20-year, mandatory minimum sentence under the original charge but pled guilty in September to involuntary manslaughter, which has an eight-year statutory maximum penalty. However, U.S. District Judge William Griesbach used the advisory sentencing guideline, which had penalties of 24-30 months in Frechette’s case.
