Panetti and Martin in rematch for Oconto mayor

The race for mayor of Oconto is a rematch of the contest that John Panetti won in 2022. In addition, there are eight candidates on the ballot for four positions on the Oconto City Council.

After a primary election pared down the field of 11 candidates, voters will choose April 2 from among Darrell Anderson, Kim Bronikowski, Dee Donlevy, Mike Feldt, Casey Sowle, Lori Stensrup, Jamie Younger and Dan Zoeller.

Gillett mayor resigns, city council has vacancies

CORRECTION: Gillett City Council President Nanette Mohr ran the Feb. 1 meeting and plans to do the same for the next two sessions March 7 and April 4. The date of the March meeting was incorrect in the original version of this article printed in the Feb. 9 Oconto County Times Herald.

The city of Gillett is limping into the April election with two vacancies on the six-member city council and no mayor.

Hoffman not running for 4th term on council

There will be at least one new face on the Shawano Common Council in 2024 as the new election season starts to take form.

Lisa Hoffman, who represents the fourth aldermanic district, will not be running for a new term. She has filed papers of non-candidacy, and it was announced by City Clerk Lesley Nemetz at the Nov. 13 council meeting.

Hoffman declined to comment on why she is not running for another term. She was first elected to the council in 2017 and is currently serving as council president.

Shawano mayoral election tentatively slated for April

Shawano Common Council President Rhonda Strebel will serve as acting mayor starting Dec. 1 until an expected election to fill the vacancy can be held in April.

It was the consensus of the council at a meeting Wednesday that a mayoral election be held in April, but the council can’t order the election until after the seat is actually vacant on Dec. 1.

Mayor Ed Whealon is resigning his seat effective Nov. 30 to move to a recently purchased home in the Town of Wescott.

Shawano mayor to step down at end of year

Shawano Mayor Ed Whealon confirmed Tuesday he will resign his office by the end of the year, leaving a vacancy that will have to be addressed by the Shawano Common Council.

Whealon was re-elected to his second two-year term as mayor in April after facing no challengers. He defeated incumbent Jeanne Cronce for the post in 2018.

The pending mayoral vacancy was included as an agenda item on the council’s meeting agenda for Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Asked how pending the vacancy would be, Whealon said, “The end of the year.”

Former mayor pleads not guilty to charges

The former mayor of Gillett waived his right to a preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty to 13 counts of theft in a business setting, during a brief appearance in Oconto County Circuit Court on July 7.

Meanwhile, the civil lawsuit filed by James A. Beaton, 39, against his former business partners has been transferred from Marinette to Oconto County court on a change of venue, by mutual agreement of the parties involved.
