Hillcrest gets grant for after-school programming

The Shawano School District and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Bay and Lakes Region have announced the award of a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant to support and establish after-school programming at Hillcrest Primary School.

This prestigious grant, aimed at enriching the educational experience of students, will significantly enhance the opportunities and resources available to Hillcrest. The grant is for $80,000 per year for the next five years.

Book vending machines give rewards for literacy

Vending machines have traditionally spit out food or drink when you put in coins or dollar bills, but new machines at Shawano elementary schools are providing books instead.

Hillcrest Primary School received its book vending machine in October, while Olga Brener Intermediate School celebrated the receipt of its machine in December with a ribbon cutting. The parent-teacher organizations at both schools helped to bring the vending machines to the schools, along with funding from Olga Brener’s Knowledge-a-thon program.

New Wolf River Dental facility gets council approval

Plans to build a new dental facility on Engel Drive are not only interesting for the city of Shawano, but local schoolchildren, as well.

The Shawano Common Council approved a development agreement Jan. 10 with Destiny Unbound LLC to build a new facility for Wolf River Dental, which currently operates out of Woodlawn Plaza. Destiny agrees to acquire 2.6 acres of land owned by the city to build the new dental clinic.
