Swimmers bring home medals from state meet

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls swim team made the most of its eight qualifying entries in this year’s Division 2 State Championship swim meet Nov. 10 in Waukesha.

The Chargers got off to a quick start when the 200-yard medley relay team of Kelsie Davis, Reese Dickman, Faith Resch and Ava Hegewald placed 11th and set a new school record of 1:54.27. The old record has held since 2005.

Later in the meet, that same foursome made a podium appearance when they again broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay and placed sixth to secure a trip to the medal ceremony.

Chelberg picked as top male cross country runner

Shawano Community High School senior Will Chelberg was named the Bay Conference boys runner of the year for the 2023 season.

Teammates Ethan Onesti and Andon Chelberg, both seniors, joined Will Chelberg in receiving first team all-conference honors.

Junior Josiah Kruel was named to the second team.

Shawano sophomore Bailey Hendricks was named to the all-conference first team on the girls side, with seniors Grace Chelberg and Lilly Guenther picking up second team honors.

Sophomores Maci Beyer and Anabelle Schroeder received honorable mention status.

Witt-Birn swimmers to compete at state meet

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls swim team stepped up big time at their sectional championship meet in Merrill on Nov. 4.

Of the 14 events in the Division 2 meet, the Chargers qualified in eight events to compete in the state championship.

The highest seed of those events is the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Faith Resch, Kelsie Davis, Ava Hegewald and Reese Dickman that is seeded sixth. The group placed second at sectionals.

Davis, Dickman, Resch and Hegewald also advanced to the state meet in the 200-yard medley relay after finishing second at Merrill.

Chargers take 4th, Hawks 6th at conference meet

Wittenberg-Birnamwood swimmers finished in fourth place, and the Shawano/Bonduel co-op took sixth at the Bay Conference Championship Meet on Oct. 24.

Door County United won the meet with 543 points. The Chargers scored 240, and the Hawks had 137.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood captured first place in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.43.

In the 200 individual medley, Witt-Birn’s Kelsy Davis placed first in 2:18.38.

The Chargers’ Faith Resch won the 50 freestyle in 25.4, while teammate Reese Dickman was third in 25.68.

Resch also won the 100 freestyle in 56.59.

Shawano swimmers top Clintonville 85-56

Shawano varsity swimmers grabbed three first-place finishes in their 85-56 win at Clintonville on Oct. 12.

In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Lily Tonn took first in 2:52, while junior Lila Melchior took second in 2:59.

Sophomore Tela Hopfensberger took first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:41. She also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:33.

Sophomore Bre Anderson placed first in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:19.

W-B swimmer sets pool, team record in backstroke

Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshman swimmer Kelsie Davis set a new pool and team record in the 100-yard backstroke when the Chargers hosted New London on Oct. 5.

Her time of 1:01.62 was more than 14 seconds faster than the No. 2 swimmer.

The pool record had stood since 2005, and the team record since the year before that.

Davis also won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.9.

In the 200-yard medley relay, it was Davis, Reese Dickman, Andrea Powell and Claire Timm earning first place in 2:14.49.

Whiting’s 4th title the top area sports story

The past year has produced plenty of memorable sports accomplishments.

There were impressive individual moments, like Oconto Falls’ Clayton Whiting winning his fourth state title, which was unanimously voted the top sports story of 2022. Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Reese Rogowski and Pulaski’s Taya Schmidt, along with several area wrestlers, also had strong state showings to earn spots among the top-10 stories.

The fall season proved to be a good one to area girls swimmers and divers, with several getting to state to cap the season this past weekend.

There were high expectations on Pulaski High School senior Taya Schmidt coming into the season as a two-time state qualifier, and she backed it up with another strong season and state appearance. For her efforts, Schmidt was named the NEW Media Inc. Girls Swimmer and Diver of the Year.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls swim state qualifiers enjoyed a solid day of competition during the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 State Meet at the Waukesha South Natatorium on Nov. 11 in Waukesha.

The Chargers had three individuals and one relay team in action, and accumulated 35½ points to place 20th as a team.

Pulaski’s Schmidt 5th at state to cap girls swim and dive career

Pulaski senior Taya Schmidt capped her high school swimming and diving career by placing fifth in the 1-meter diving event at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 State Meet at the Waukesha South Natatorium on Nov. 12 in Waukesha.

Schmidt finished with a score of 428.45 to earn the fifth-place finish.

“This year, I thought I did pretty good at state,” said Schmidt. “Although a few dives did not go the way I was hoping, I did my best I could’ve in the moment and I’m happy with the way I placed.”
