Basketball coaches pick Brooks for all-state team

Lena’s Eva Brooks has been named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 5 All-State Team.

Brooks led Lena (28-3) to a state runner-up finish in the program’s first state tournament appearance since 1991. The 6-1 forward averaged 19.8 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.7 steals, and 3.3 blocks per game for coach Tim Goldschmidt and the Wildcats. Brooks will enter her senior year with 1,153 career points. Lena has a 63-20 record over her first three seasons.

Haffner makes it to semifinals in 2024 WIAA Girls 3-Point Challenge

Gresham senior Madolyn Haffner was among four girls to make it to the semifinals in the 2024 WIAA Girls 3-Point Challenge on March 9 in Ashwaubenon.

Lindsey Schadewalt of New Glarus won the challenge and set a new record for total points.

Ten participants were selected for the event based on stats information entered by coaches into the WisSports.net database. The top two 3-point shooters (with a minimum 75 attempts) from each division were chosen to participate.

For the community of Lena, the three-day adventure began and ended with a stalwart group of teenage girls riding atop fire trucks to the high school gymnasium.

In between were exhilarating highs and heartbreaking disappointments as a community rode a roller coaster of emotions with the young ladies.

Lena advances to state title game

The Lena Wildcats, in the school’s fourth trip to the state girls basketball tournament, are one win away from their second state title.

After a workman-like 53-48 victory over Clear Lake on March 8, the Wildcats (28-2) are scheduled to play Albany/Monticello in the WIAA Division 5 state championship game at 11:05 a.m. March 9 at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

Lena’s girls basketball team advanced to the state tournament with a 66-57 win over Pittsville in Antigo on March 2.

Madilyn Thomson scored 23 points, and Eva Brooks dropped in another 20 to lead the Wildcats. Also scoring were Kali Fischer with 11, Whitney Potter with six, and Hannah Thomson and Maddy Kushner, each with three.

Brooks had a stunning 20 rebounds, with Hannah Thomson and Madilyn Thomson each pulling down eight. Madilyn Thomson led her teammates with five assists and four steals.

Bonduel

Bonduel’s red hot season came to an abrupt end with a 47-30 loss to Laconia in the regional finals.

Lena

Lena was crowned regional champs as they upended Florence 48-29. The Wildcats carried both halves, 18-13 before the break and 30-16 after the break.

Madilyn Thomson led Lena with 17 points, while Eva Brooks added 13.

Shawano falls to Bay Conference champs in OT

With the regular season coming to an end and the playoffs set to begin, the Shawano Hawks (16-8) had one more piece of business to take care of as they had a chance to play spoiler Feb. 15. Facing off against the Bay Conference-leading Xavier Hawks (17-7), Shawano had the opportunity to spoil the fun as a win would allow West De Pere to tie Xavier for the conference crown.

Not only that, but sophomore Leah Nordin entered the game 12 points away from 1,000 as all eyes were on her.

Gillett

Gillett improved to 10-6 in the Marinette & Oconto Conference with a 55-15 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas Academy. It is the third conference win in a row for Gillett, 14-9 overall.

Lena defeats Suring

Returning to the win column in the Marinette & Oconto Conference, Lena defeated Suring 77-47.

Lena (15-1, 22-2) lost its only conference game to Coleman earlier but still remains in first place. Suring dropped to 3-13 in conference play and 5-19 overall.

Bonduel

Bonduel crushed Manawa 70-28 in Central Wisconsin East Conference action. The Bears improved to 13-0 in league play and 21-2 overall.

Bonduel was led by Hailee Thompson and her 19 points, including four triples, along with Ella Hischke with 14 and Audrey Weier with 10.

Juliana Jacobs led the Bears with eight rebounds, with Thompson and Weier each grabbing seven, and Hischke and Hailey Zernicke each with six. Hischke led with five assists and seven steals.

Bowler

Wrightstown rallies late to steal one from Oconto Falls girls basketball team

As the regular season winds down for high school girls basketball, every win is crucial as teams try to put yourselves in the best position possible for the postseason.

That is no different for the Oconto Falls Panthers (12-9, 8-8) as they took to the road to take on the Wrightstown Tigers (12-8, 11-5) on Feb. 6.
