Behnke tops Schmidt for Assembly race

Greg Parker, district attorney for Shawano and Menominee counties, held off a challenge by former Assistant District Attorney Alec Ballo in the Aug. 13 Republican primary.

Parker topped Ballo 4,312 to 1,911 in the vote total, sweeping the entire city of Shawano. Parker lost by two votes in the Town of Bartelme and in the city of Marion. Parker won the rest of the municipalities in Shawano County.

6th Assembly District

Republican Rep. Elijah Behnke defeated incumbent Rep. Peter Schmidt in the 6th Assembly District, 4,842 (58.6%) to 3,421 (41.4%).

Hovde fights back against attack ads

U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde told a group of Oconto-area supporters July 8 his staff was building a section of his campaign website, tentatively called “Truth Matters,” to address the various claims he said Sen. Tammy Baldwin and her supporters have been making about him in their TV ads.

“Senator Baldwin, the day I announced back in February, prior to me even announcing, she has been playing the politics of personal destruction and trying to portray me in ways that are just fundamentally wrong,” Hovde said during a campaign stop at Irish Greens Golf Course.

Extended fall absentee voting hours OK’d

The Oconto Falls City Clerk’s Office has been granted permission to extend its office hours during the run-up to the Nov. 5 election to accommodate voters who want to submit an in-person absentee ballot.

Deputy Clerk Jenny Friedman asked the city council July 9 for the OK to keep the office open until 6 p.m. in an effort to put the city on somewhat more equal footing with bigger municipalities that have enough staff for much longer hours.

“This would give us a little bit more of a window for citizens,” Friedman said.

Lyerly has eye on Gallagher’s Congressional seat

A Democrat has joined the growing list of people seeking to claim the 8th Congressional District seat formerly held by Mike Gallagher, and she made a visit May 15 to Shawano in the hopes of bringing her fellow Democrats locally out of hiding.

Hinze challenging for longtime Republican seat

The Republicans found a candidate to get behind for the 6th Assembly District election, and now Democrats have found their own as Shirley Hinze, of Shawano, has announced she’s pursuing the legislative seat.

Hinze said she’s running in the hopes that her community benefits from the actions the Wisconsin Legislature takes.

“In the 10 years I’ve been here (in Shawano), this community has voted Republican,” Hinze said. “I live in this community, and what do we get? Nothing. They keep voting for this and this, and there’s nothing coming back into the district.”

Behnke to challenge Schmidt in GOP primary

State Rep. Elijah Behnke has announced his candidacy for the 6th Assembly District seat, setting up a primary contest with fellow Republican Rep. Peter Schmidt.

Behnke scheduled a news conference at Shawano County Republican Party headquarters for April 30 to announce his decision.

Behnke has represented the 89th Assembly District since he won an April 2021 special election to fill the unexpired term of then-Rep. John Nygren. He was re-elected to a second two-year term in November 2022.

New mayor, council president in Oconto Falls

Quietly and without fanfare, Oconto Falls Mayor Brad Rice presided over the old business on the council’s April 16 agenda, accepted a plaque thanking him for his service, adjourned and took a seat in the audience to watch newly elected Mayor Clint Braun take the oath of office and conduct the new business.

Cowles opting out on another Senate term

Sen. Rob Cowles, R-Green Bay, has announced that he will not seek reelection to the Wisconsin State Senate.

Cowles, who represented the 2nd Senate District until new legislative maps came out this year, sent out a press release expressing his gratitude to some of the people he has worked with, noting that they helping him to do his job better.
