DNR reports successful 2023 elk hunting season

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is celebrating a successful elk hunting season. The state’s sixth elk hunting season opened Oct. 14 and closed Nov. 12, as a result of all four state licensed hunters filling their harvest authorizations.

County eyes purchase of former ranger station

Oconto County is in the process of acquiring the former Department of Natural Resources ranger station in Oconto Falls.

The DNR notified the county in July that the 1.03-acre site is no longer needed as a ranger station. Since the parcel has limited potential for recreational use, agency planners recommended putting it up for sale. It was offered first to local units of government and tribes, with an asking price of $150,000.

Officials add recommendations to wolf management plan

Wisconsin wildlife officials released a revised draft wolf management plan Aug. 1 that recommends holding the statewide population at around 1,000 animals, a concession to conservatives looking for a hard limit.

DNR’s Operation Deer Watch launches Aug. 1

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will launch Operation Deer Watch on Aug. 1, allowing citizen scientists around Wisconsin to report deer sightings in their area, which provides crucial data for deer management.

Participation in Operation Deer Watch is simple, requires no registration and can be done using a computer or mobile device. DNR researchers ask participants to report deer sightings, including bucks, does and fawns, between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30 via an easy-to-use online form.

Wisconsin Natural Resource Board meeting set for June 23

Sturgeon Park to be closed for spawning season

SHAWANO — Coronavirus concerns have quashed a popular annual event that typically takes place in the spring of each year.

The city of Shawano has announced it will temporarily close down Sturgeon Park effective April 9, cutting the park off to the throngs of visitors that usually gather for the annual sturgeon spawn.
