Schmidt votes to fund American Family Field

State Rep. Peter Schmidt, R-Bonduel, voted in favor of legislation that will provide funding for maintenance and rehabilitation of American Family Field, which is nearly a quarter of a century old.

“This is a good deal for Wisconsin, and there will be no new taxes on Wisconsinites,” said Schmidt. “This isn’t a handout or a bailout, and the Milwaukee Brewers will contribute an addition $100 million. The state’s investment in the stadium will be funded by taxes from team salaries.”

It’s never a good sign when a professional sports organization is holding its hand out for money. However, that’s what the Milwaukee Brewers are doing right now, panhandling for legislators to fork over $290 million in taxpayer funds for renovations to its stadium.

Brewers’ Mitchell could miss rest of season due to shoulder

Milwaukee Brewers rookie center fielder Garrett Mitchell is at risk of missing the rest of the season after an MRI revealed significant damage to his left shoulder.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said April 21 that Mitchell is getting a second opinion. If Mitchell has to undergo surgery, Counsell said that would “definitely put the rest of the season in jeopardy.”

“It’s kind of a tough pill to swallow,” Mitchell said April 21 before the Brewers’ game against the Boston Red Sox. “You’re never expecting to hear news like that. Just trying to stay positive about it.”

Brewers, Wade Miley agree to 1-year contract

The Milwaukee Brewers and veteran left-hander Wade Miley agreed to a $4.5 million, one-year contract on Jan. 4, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Miley can make additional $1.5 million in incentives, and there is a $10 million mutual option for 2024.

The person confirmed the move to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been announced. The Athletic first reported Miley’s deal.

Milwaukee also acquired right-hander Bryse Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash earlier Wednesday.

Brewers’ president of baseball operations Stearns steps down

David Stearns is stepping away from his role as the Milwaukee Brewers’ president of baseball operations, saying Oct. 27 he just needs a break and isn’t thinking about taking a job with any other organization.

Stearns will remain with the Brewers in an advisory role to owner Mark Attanasio. Matt Arnold, who has been the Brewers’ senior vice president and general manager since 2020, takes over the lead role in overseeing baseball operations.

Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledged the trade of four-time All-Star closer Josh Hader affected the team more than he expected at the time he made the deal.

The Brewers were 57-45 and had a three-game lead in the NL Central on Aug. 1 when they traded Hader to the San Diego Padres for pitchers Taylor Rogers and Dinelson Lamet, pitching prospect Robert Gasser and outfield prospect Esteury Ruiz. The Brewers went 29-31 the rest of the way and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

In the week since the trading of four-time All-Star closer Josh Hader, virtually nothing has gone right for the Milwaukee Brewers.

They owned a three-game lead in the NL Central when they sent Hader to the San Diego Padres, but have gone 1-5 since and trail the streaking St. Louis Cardinals by two games.

Dinelson Lamet was designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers on Aug. 3, two days after being acquired in a trade that sent closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres.

The right-hander came to Milwaukee as part of a package including closer Taylor Rogers and prospects Robert Gasser and Esteury Rodriguez. Lamet pitched in 13 games for the Padres this season, going 0-1 with a 9.49 ERA.

Brewers agree to $20.5M Ashby deal through 2027

Left-hander Aaron Ashby and Milwaukee agreed July 23 to a $20.5 million, five-year contract through 2027, and the NL Central leaders made a short-term addition in former San Francisco reliever Jake McGee.

Ashby’s deal includes club options for 2028 and 2029. The 23-year-old is 2-7 with a 4.56 ERA and one save in 12 starts and six relief appearances, striking out 83 in 69 innings.

He would not have been eligible for arbitration until after the 2024 season, and the options could cover two seasons in which he potentially would be eligible for free agency.

Brewers’ Burnes, Hader named NL All-Stars

The Milwaukee Brewers will send two pitchers to the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.

Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader were named National League All-Stars for the second consecutive year, with Hader set to make his fourth total appearance at the Midsummer Classic.

For Burnes, the All-Star game marks yet another sign of his recent dominance. The National League’s reigning Cy Young Award winner has stifled opponents through the first half, leading the league with 134 strikeouts while maintaining a 2.20 ERA.
