Shawano boys basketball team holds on late for big Bay win

The Shawano Community High School boys basketball did just enough in the final minutes to fend off a New London comeback attempt and pick up a much-needed 72-68 Bay Conference win on Jan. 21 in Shawano.

The win bumped the Hawks to 4-2 in conference play, which is good enough for a tie for second with West De Pere and New London. The victory also keeps the team’s chances of a conference title alive, as Shawano has yet to play conference leader Xavier, which is 6-0.

Oconto Falls boys basketball team falls against Lux-Casco

The Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team had a valiant comeback effort come up a little bit short in a 77-64 North Eastern Conference loss to Luxemburg-Casco on Jan. 20 in Oconto Falls.

Slow starts to each half had the Panthers playing from behind all night. Oconto Falls trailed by around 20 points for much of the second half and were down 67-43 with under nine minutes to play, but the hosts whittled that deficit down to nine eventually, and might have come even closer had it not been for some ill-timed infractions.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bonduel 59

Witt-Birn 48

Bonduel knocked off Wittenberg-Birnamwood in a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division clash on Jan. 20 in Bonduel.

Ryan Westrich led a quartet of Bonduel players in double figures with 15 points. Noah Weier added 13 points.

Charlie Tauchen chipped in 11 points for the Bears, while Colin Margelofsky hit three 3-pointers and finished with 10 points.

Marion boys basketball team stuns Bowler after big comeback

The Marion High School boys basketball team overcame a 17-point second half deficit and topped Bowler 64-63 in a Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division thriller on Jan. 17 in Marion.

The furious comeback kept Marion atop the conference standings. The Mustangs are now 5-0 in CWC-North games and are the only conference team without a loss.

While Marion’s comeback efforts didn’t begin until about five minutes into the second half, senior Ryan Malueg said it was a halftime message that woke the team up.

Gresham 55

Menominee Indian 44

Gresham pulled away in the second half to pick up a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover win over Menominee Indian on Jan. 17 in Gresham. The Wildcats outscored the Eagles 29-20 in the final 18 minutes of play.

Maddie Haffner knocked down seven field goals and four free throws to score 20 points for Gresham. Janay Pecore-Kirkland added 10 points.

Bonduel 61

Algoma 17

Bonduel rolled to a nonconference win over Algoma on Jan. 16 in Bonduel. The Bears led 37-8 by halftime.

Hailey Zernicke recorded 18 points and eight rebounds to power Bonduel. Ella Hischke added 12 points and four steals.

Hailee Thompson dished out three assists for the Bears in the win.

Gillett 20

Wittenberg-Birnamwood eased past Gillett in a nonconference matchup on Jan. 16 in Gillett.

Marion boys basketball team rallies past Tigerton in big CWC-North tilt

The Marion High School boys basketball team rallied a couple different time to pick up a critical 48-44 Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division win over Tigerton on Jan. 13 in Tigerton.

Marion rallied from a 12-point deficit in the opening half and then a seven-point deficit in the second half before hanging on late.

“We came in here expecting to have a slow start, on the road in conference, it’s going to be tough to get a good start, so we were just prepared” said Marion’s Parker Miller, who scored 17 points.

Suring 60

Wausaukee 47

Suring picked up a Marinette & Oconto Conference win over Wausaukee on Jan. 13 in Wausaukee.

Christine Sleeter posted 24 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks for Suring.

Mackenzie Bailey tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks for the Eagles, while Bunny Cramer had 10 points and six assists.

Emma Kristof chipped in six points for Suring. Macie Reed was credited with three steals.

WRESTLING

Shawano 46

New London 33

Shawano won eight of the final 11 weight classes to claim a Bay Conference win over New London on Jan. 12 in Shawano.

Drake Herm got Shawano on the scoreboard with a 16-2 major decision win at 138 pounds. Dylan Hodkiewicz (145) and Carsen Herm (152) followed with pins in 49 and 51 seconds, respectively.

Athlete Profile: Jacob Landon

The Shawano Community High School boys basketball team won nine of its first 11 games this winter season and is in the hunt for a Bay Conference title. Senior Jacob Landon has played a big role in the team’s strong start and will continue to be a key component of the team’s future success.

Through 11 games, Landon has posted averages of 11.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

Landon scored a season-high 30 points in a nonconference win over Pulaski on Dec. 3, and he has six other games in double figures.
