A report of a wild bat testing positive for rabies has been verified in Shawano County, according to the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department.

The bat was found in the Town of Green Valley following an encounter with a family pet. The last report of a rabid animal in Shawano County was also a wild bat in 2023.

A memorial service to honor the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk drew nearly 300 people to Franklin Park in Shawano on Sept. 18, more than a week after the conservative media personality was killed.

Several descendants of a family that immigrated to Shawano before the start of the Civil War gathered Sept. 11 to, among other things, see the Shawano Has History plaque showcasing the family hardware store.

Mary Podzilni, of Shawano, was joined by four family members to see the plaque marking the former home of Schweers Hardware at 127 S. Main St., Shawano. Today, the building is home to War Bonnet Native American Gifts.

Menominee tribal members engaged in big food projects or who want to host larger quantities of people for feasts have a place to do so now.
