Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School golfer Calvin Scheurer came into the spring season with plenty of memorable experiences already on his side.

Scheurer enjoyed a strong regular season as a senior before turning things up a notch to eventually reach state. NEW Media named Scheurer the Boys Golfer of the Year after his strong finish to the season.

“This season it definitely helped to have the great guidance of my coaches, but my teammates also helped out to keep me levelheaded,” said Scheurer.

“The summer after junior year, I played lots of golf and really tried to find that consistent swing,” added Scheurer. “But I was able to find that substituting a round of golf for a range session could be more beneficial in the long run.”

Scheurer served as Witt-Birn’s top golfer all season and was one of the top golfers in the Central Wisconsin Conference. He ended up placing second as an individual at the end of the conference season.

Despite trying to keep pace with the CWC’s best golfers, Scheurer wasn’t paying too much attention to anyone but himself.

“I try to focus on my game and block out what everyone else was scoring,” said Scheurer. “I mainly tried to focus on my next shot knowing it was more important than the last.”

Scheurer continued to deploy that mindset as the postseason started up, and it worked for him.

Scheurer advanced to sectionals after finishing as the seventh-highest individual golfer at the Clintonville Regional. He shot a 44 on the front nine before dialing things in on the back nine for a 38 to advance.

With his season on the line again at the Marinette Sectional, Scheurer turned in one of his best rounds of the season. He fired a 78 and then beat a pair of other individuals for medalist honors.

“My favorite memory from this year definitely was the postseason, starting with sectionals,” said Scheurer. “After that it was just an amazing experience.”

Scheurer ended his season and high school career at state, where he placed 32nd after the two-day event. He fired a round of 85 before improving to an 84 on the final day.

Along with his strong golf season, Scheurer also did some pitching for the baseball team this spring.

Honorable mentions

Scheurer was one of several talented individual golfers in the area this spring.

Bonduel’s Cooper Uelmen was the CWC’s top individual golfer this season. Jake Dreyer was the CWC’s fifth-best golfer, while Reed Luepke came in 12th and Reece Stoltenow 13th.

Nolan Fraaza was Witt-Birn’s No. 2 golfer this spring and finished as the CWC’s sixth-best golfer overall.

Gresham’s Corbin Welch also had a strong season, and finished 11th in the CWC final standings.

Shawano’s Kaden Marcell enjoyed a big season in the Bay Conference. He finished as the second-best golfer and then led the Hawks at regionals and sectionals before falling just short of state. Shawano’s Owen Moesch and Gage Gorman were both honorable mentions in the Bay.

Kadyn Riel and Rease Hodkiewicz led Oconto Falls in the North Eastern Conference, landing on the second team and honorable mention team, respectively.

Pulaski’s Connor Burant and Colin Schultz both made the honorable mention list in the Fox River Classic Conference.

Team of the year

Bonduel earned the Team of the Year honor for its big spring campaign.

The Bears ran out a lineup with five golfers all capable of finishing as the medalist that day, so it should come as no surprise that they comfortably won the CWC team title.

Bonduel then won the Iola-Scandinavia Regional and had all five golfers place in the top 22 that day. The team missed out on state by just a couple shots at sectionals.
