Volleyball: Witt-Birn has strong showing at tournament

Chargers take third after losing just once

WISCONSIN DELLS — Wittenberg-Birnamwood posted a 6-1 record to take third place at the Friendship Tournament on Thursday and Friday.

Witt-Birn topped Green Bay Preble (25-20, 16-25, 15-13), Prairie du Chien (25-18, 25-10), Rhinelander (25-11, 25-17), Peshtigo (25-18, 25-8), Holmen (25-21, 22-25, 15-9) and Green Bay Preble (17-25, 25-19, 15-12) again. The Chargers only loss came to Lake Mills (25-11, 25-14).

In the first win over Preble, Elizabeth Muscha finished with 24 digs for Witt-Birn. McKenna Metropulos had 12 assists and Marissa Groshek tallied five kills.

Against Prairie du Chien, Groshek had eight kills, while Abi Fraaza added six. Metropulos contributed 10 assists, while Lilly Betry had eight. Muscha had 25 digs.

Metropulos finished with six assists and three aces in the win over Rhinelander. Nicole Kielman also served three aces. Groshek had six attack kills, while Fraaza had three block kills.

Groshek again led the Chargers in kills against Peshtigo, tallying six. Metropulos tallied 12 assists, while Muscha had nine digs.

Fraaza had a big game against Holmen, posting 11 attack kills. Metropulos totaled 14 assists and four aces, while Muscha had 12 digs and three aces. Groshek had three block kills.

In the team's lone loss, Metropulos contributed nine assists. Muscha had 11 digs.

Groshek and Fraaza finished with eight and six attack kills, respectively, in the second win over Preble. Metropulos totaled 12 assists and Muscha had 16 digs.

"I'm so proud of how the girls played these past two days," said Witt-Birn coach Becky Rew. "Finishing third overall in the tournament is a huge success for us and they earned every bit of it. We never gave up, came back from behind, and relied on multiple girls for scoring to make these wins a true team effort. It has been a great week starting us in the right direction for this season."
