Tickets on sale for Oconto Cemetery Walk

The Oconto County Historical Society is planning to stage its 11th Annual Cemetery Walk, “If Tombstones Could Talk,” on Sept. 13, 14 and 15.

The evening of Sept. 13 will find the walk being staged outdoors at the Evergreen Cemetery, 325 Cook Ave., Oconto, at 6 p.m.

On the evenings of Sept. 14 and 15, the walk will be presented at 6 p.m. in the John B. LeMay Auditorium at Oconto Senior High School, 1717 Superior Ave., Oconto.

The individuals who will be portrayed this year and have their family stories told include: Gen. Wilbur Lee, war hero and civic leader; Caroline Zippel, Oconto business owner; George Beyer, self-made man and community leader; Josie Carlson, lifetime Oconto resident and helped anyone in need; Apphia “Effie” Couillard Leigh, first white child born along the Oconto River; and Dr. Herman Aageson, longtime Oconto physician.

Tour-goers will be led in groups through the cemetery by lantern-carrying guides for the outdoor walk. Those attending the outdoor performance are urged to wear comfortable shoes as the tour requires an amount of walking, sometimes on uneven ground. You may also wish to bring a flashlight and insect repellent. The indoor performances are designed for people who may find it difficult to walk in the cemetery, but they are open to everyone.

Tickets are $10 per person and will be sold at the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum through Sept. 3. The Museum is closed on Tuesdays. If any tickets remain unsold after Sept. 3, they will be available for sale at Roberts Hometown Hardware, 919 Main St., Oconto. In addition, remaining unsold tickets will be available for sale just prior to each evening’s performance.

There are a limited number of tickets for the performances and tickets sell out fast. Complimentary refreshments will be served to tour-goers at the cemetery on the evening of Sept. 13, and in the cafeteria of the Oconto High School following the performances on Sept. 14 and 15. In the event of inclement weather on Sept. 13, the performance will be moved indoors to the Oconto High School auditorium.
