Sandy Steinke is the new president for the Shawano Common Council, receiving unanimous approval from the council during its April 19 reorganization meeting.

Steinke replaces Rhonda Strebel, who opted not to run for reelection this year.

The reorganization also included appointing council members to the city’s committees and commissions. The council unanimously accepted the recommendations of Steinke and Mayor Bruce Milavitz.

In previous years, the council president had been allowed to go behind closed doors with the requests of the council members and come forth with recommendations, but Milavitz said that, based on the advice of counsel, the practice is being abolished.

The city also administered the oath of office for new Alderman Jim Hauer, along with John Hoeffs and Lisa Hoffman, as well as Mayor Bruce Milavitz, who were all elected without opposition for another term.
