Michael Sleeper was elected president of the Shawano School Board on May 3, even as one school board member questioned whether the voting took place at the meeting or outside the meeting.

Sleeper, who has been the board’s vice president, received six votes to be named president, while board member Chuck Dallas received three. The vote was for officers was done by secret ballot, so there is no indication who voted for each candidate. Sleeper is taking over for Tyler Schmidt, who did not run for reelection.

After the vote, Sleeper expressed his appreciation to the board for putting him in the leadership position.

“I look forward to working with each and every one of you,” Sleeper said.

Board member Mart Grams also spoke after the vote, questioning whether this was an action item and suggesting “pre-voting” might have taken place.

“Somebody was pre-voting before we got here,” Grams said. “Call it what you may, but I object to the vote.”

Grams did not elaborate further, and Sleeper opted to move on to the next election, which was for vice president. Mike Musolff was unanimously elected after no other nominations were offered for the post.

Alysia Pillsbury was re-elected the clerk for the board, also by unanimous approval.

Dallas, who lost the presidential race, was re-elected as the board’s treasurer, getting six votes and defeating Grams, who received three.

The board also welcomed new board members Jamie Beyer and James Davel, who won seats in the last election.
