SHAWANO — Employees of the Shawano School District will have strong incentives for cost savings in next year’s health insurance program, according to the plan adopted Thursday night by the school board.

The district anticipates its cost will be $3.8 million for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, beginning July 1. That is down more than $108,000 from the current fiscal year, according to the proposal presented by Nick Curran, district business manager and human resources director.

At the heart of the incentives is employees participating in a health risk assessment program, often available through their doctor. Participation will result in a 5% cost savings on premiums.

Board member Michael Sleeper called the plan a “win-win-win.”

Sleeper said the school district wins because it wants quality teachers in the classroom who are healthier.

He added the second win is for employees who have the opportunity to be healthier and keep their premium costs down. The third win is also for the district in controlling its costs.

Assuming they participate, the premium for a single employee will be $67.51 per month, down about $11 from last year. An employee plus one person premium is $135.02 per month, down about $22 from last year.

The family premium is set at $156.63 per month, down about $16 from last year.

In recommending adoption of the plan, board member Chuck Dallas, finance committee chairman, noted the board is looking for employees to get tested and invest in their health.
