Shawano boys 2nd, girls 3rd at Smiley Cross-Country Invitational

Pulaski, Witt-Birn teams also turn in strong finishes

The Shawano Community High School boys cross-country team earned a second-place finish in the Division 1 small school division at the Smiley Invitational on Sept. 18 in Wausau.

The Shawano girls came in third on the day.

Pulaski and Wittenberg-Birnamwood also competed at the invitational. Pulaski's girls team came in fourth, while the boys were fifth. The Witt-Birn boys claimed ninth among Division 2 teams, with the girls team taking 10th.

Ethan Onesti led the Shawano boys on the day, placing fourth with a time of 16 minutes, 59.5 seconds. Aidan Preston (17:38.9) and Will Chelberg (17:44.4) took 15th and 16th, respectively.

Andon Chelberg (18:01.7) and Connor Chelberg (18:50.5) rounded out the team's top five, finishing 20th and 31st, respectively.

Grace Beyer earned a time of 20:42.3 to finish fourth and lead the Shawano girls team.

Lily Guenther (20:55.9) and Grace Chelberg (21:06.1) also finished inside the top 10, taking seventh and ninth, respectively.

Caitlyn Moede (23:56.4) and Adalyn Barkley (24:05.2) rounded out the team's top five, placing 43rd and 46th, respectively.

Olivia Stedl (21:26.9) paced the Pulaski girls with a 17th-place finish in 21:26.9. T.J. Shaw took sixth in 17:03.4 to lead the Pulaski boys.

Angela Opolka (21:28.8), Lily Urben (21:36.6), Jada Fischer (22:06.2) and Rachael Allen (22:40.5) rounded out the girls team, placing 18th, 20th, 24th and 28th, respectively.

Connor Heezen (18:13.9) placed 22nd for the boys, while Nick Symons (18:39.9) was 28th. Dayne Nowak (19:30.2) and Connor Nooyen (19:40.7) capped the team, finishing 41st and 46th, respectively.

Simon Schairer (19:17.3) and Craig Wendel (19:21.1) led the Witt-Birn boys by placing 39th and 40th, respectively.

Mason Meverden (20:07) claimed 50th, Owen Schultz (20:45.9) was 56th and Ian Salvesen (21:47.9) took 65th to fill out the team's top five.

The Witt-Birn girls all finished within 16 spots of each other, with Ruby Nowinsky (23:54) leading the way with a 59th-place finish. Annika Resch (27:02) placed 69th.

Ava Wepner (30:47.5), Ava Hegewald (30:56.6) and Amelia Bessert (32:17) filled out the team's top five, claiming 72nd, 73rd and 75th, respectively.
