The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board voted to resurface the tennis courts at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School at its July 26 school board meeting.

According to Superintendent Garrett Rogowski, the tennis courts at the school were constructed in the late 1990s. Due to the high use and the age of the tennis courts, the school board agreed to approve a quote of $45,678 from American Systems located in Suamico. Rogowski said that this will not burden taxpayers.

“This will not affect taxpayers,” said Rogowski. “This is all through our maintenance fund, which we budgeted for.”

After the resurfacing, pickleball lines will be put in, due to the recently popularity of the sport, said Rogowski.

Rogowski went on to explain the importance of having the tennis courts in good shape.

“We want to increase the longevity of the courts,” said Rogowski. “We have tennis in our physical education curriculum. These are also the only courts for public use in the community.”

Rogowski explained that, due to the high usage from the community in the summer, the courts should be resurfaced.

“Because this is the only community used tennis courts in the area, we want the courts to work for everyone,” said Rogowski.

Resurfacing of the tennis courts is one of the many projects that is happening for the school during the summer, as the concession stand by the football field and maintenance facility are being upgraded as well. The school is also replacing lighting and ceiling fixtures in the hallways of all the Wittenberg and Birnamwood schools.

The tennis court resurfacing project is projected to take two months, with a tentative finishing date of mid-September.
