WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District board on Sept. 12 approved bids totaling over $5.65 million for construction at the high school and two elementary/middle schools. Bids for the second phase of projects approved by voters in November as part of a $13.1 million referendum came in on budget for the bids collected so far.

Matt MacGregor, project manager for Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction Inc., told the board he was pleased with the bidder turnout for this phase of construction.

This phase of the referendum project includes a new 7,800-square-foot building — primarily for agriculture classrooms — next to the high school, a two-story addition to Wittenberg Elementary-Middle School and two new classrooms at Birnamwood Elementary-Middle School.

Three 900-square-foot classrooms will be added at Wittenberg Elementary-Middle School and two 1,200-square-foot classrooms at Birnamwood. Both buildings will be reconfigured to provide more classroom space for the music program.

According to MacGregor the goal for this meeting was to qualify site, structure and building related packages to be able to get the structures up and enclosed along with the projects that require a longer time to complete.

There will be other bids, which need to be qualified before presenting to the board for approval including finishes, flooring, structural steel, and case work projects.

Plans are set to have all the rest of the bids in for the board to approve by the end of October.

Three projects that received no bids were for polish concrete, epoxy floors, and asphalt paving. Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction Inc., will continue to try to get contractors interesting in bidding for those projects.

Groundbreaking for the ag building is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the east side of the high school building.
