One ice fishing derby off, one on
One side effect of the warmer than normal winter is that a number of annual events that revolve around ice fishing have been canceled or modified this year.
As of Feb. 19, however, the Finnegan Lake Walleye Club was still promoting its annual ice fishing derby, with registration taking place at Zippel Park in Gillett from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 24 and activities at the park until 5 p.m.
A variety of raffles were also planned, including a cash raffle with the main drawing at 4:30 p.m., bucket raffles until 4 p.m., and walk-around gun raffles from noon to 3 p.m. A live auction was scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Unsafe conditions on the Oconto River led St. Anthony Catholic School and Church to cancel its annual ice fishing derby Feb. 10. The accompanying cash raffle proceeded as usual, with the drawing shown on Facebook Live.
The Oconto Falls City Council agreed Feb. 13 to transfer St. Anthony’s temporary liquor license from the fishing derby to the school auction scheduled for April 26.
