Oconto County and Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission staff have scheduled a public informational meeting to provide information about the county’s hazard mitigation plan update. The session is planned to run from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the Oconto County Law Enforcement Conference Center, 220 Arbutus Ave., Oconto.

Hazard mitigation planning involves developing a set of actions designed to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards and their effects.

The 157-page plan for 2021-26 is an update of a similar five-year plan adopted in 2015 and notes that the county “has experienced several hazard events” in the ensuing years, most notable the windstorm of July 2019 that resulted in a federal disaster declaration, as well as the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The informational meeting will provide interested individuals with an overview of the plan, a draft plan for review, display maps from the plan and an opportunity to comment.

The commission has posted the draft plan at https://baylakerpc.org/services/community/hazard-mitigation-planning (scroll down to Oconto County 2021-2026 draft).
