Nancy L. Werner

Nancy Lee Werner, 90, of Shawano, passed away on Nov. 13, 2021, in Appleton. She was born May 6, 1931, in Elgin, Illinois, a daughter of William H. and Ruby (Lester) Schultz, of Bartlett, Illinois. Nancy graduated from Elgin High School with the Class of 1949 and Northwestern Nursing College in Evanston, Illinois, with the Class of 1952.

She and her first husband, Rodger Carlson, raised three children in Bartlett, Illinois. She was a member of the Bartlett Women’s Club and Immanuel United Church of Christ where she was the Sunday School superintendent. She worked on the maternity ward at Delnor Hospital in St. Charles after graduation and, in 1965, started working for Dr. Kase, OB/GYN, in Elgin, Illinois, until her retirement in 1991.

When she moved to Shawano in 1993, she became a member of United Methodist Church where she met many dear friends. She was a member of the Red Hatters, the 31 Club and enjoyed playing lots of bridge.

Nancy is survived by her children, Sandra (Dale) Volkening, of Gilberts, Illinois, William (Mary) Carlson, of Shawano, and Annette (Chuck) Smith, of Brownsville, Oregon; eight grandchildren, Rebecca (Mark) Kelly, Adam (Michelle) Volkening, Katie (Dustin) Wing, Jessica (Chuck) Wolfgram, Amanda (Justin) GaVette, Keri (A.J.) Schneider, Brandon Smith and Gavin Smith; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Annette Dickinson, of Eureka, Illinois; her brother-in-law, William White, of Algonquin, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Naomi White; her brother-in-law, Richard Dickinson; and her two husbands, Rodger Carlson and Jack Werner.

A celebration of her life will be held at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Elgin, Illinois, starting at 11 a.m. on July 9, 2022, with the service at noon and interment at Lakewood Memorial in Elgin following.

Memorials may be made out to United Methodist Church or ThedaCare Hospice, both in Shawano.
