Marvin H. Zahn

Marvin H. Zahn, 85, Gillett, entered into eternal rest Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, in the farmhouse where he was also born and raised.

Marvin was born on Aug. 11, 1938, to the late Robert C. and Hattie (Mueller) Zahn. He was a baptized, confirmed and lifelong active member of Immanuel/Faith United Lutheran Church in Gillett. On July 26, 1958, Marvin married Dorothy Mae Timm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Gillett, which was located directly across the road from the Zahn farm. Marvin dedicated his life to his faith in Christ.

He was a fourth generation farmer on his family farm that was established in 1878. He worked side by side with his father and passed that same passion of farming on to his own family. He was a man of the land and went from driving his team of horses (Barney and Kernal) to driving the largest John Deere tractor made. There was never an empty buddy seat in his tractor, as he always loved taking his grandsons with him whenever he could.

Marvin was very proud that he and his son, Robert, traveled to Germany and got to tour the John Deere chopper factory, and see the homeland of his German ancestors. He saw the farm grow from 14 cows to a size he could never have imagined.

Marvin had many joys in life outside of farming. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed fishing, camping and playing dartball. He liked making homemade sausage and never missed a year of deer hunting right on the farm. Along with so many other talents, he was an expert carpenter. He and his sons built many barns and sheds by hand throughout the years. He could be seen riding around the farm in his Kubota UTV checking on things every day.

Marvin will be remembered as a selfless, kindhearted man who would help anyone at any time. He was a very patient man and never complained. He loved that the farm allowed him to work close with family every day. Marvin’s genuine smile will be missed by all.

Marvin is survived by three sons, Robert (Kathleen) Zahn, Ricky (Debbie) Zahn and Randy Zahn; one daughter, Cindy (John) Banchy; grandchildren, Justin (fiancé Whitney), Jacob (Kaitlyn), Jesse (fiancé Emily), Eric (Kelly), Mindy Ward, Noah (Crystal), Luke; great-grandchildren, Kaden and Delaney; sister, Beatrice Krause; brother, Ronald (Jody) Zahn; special friend, Gloria Bonnin; and family friend, Joanne. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; sister Lillian (Roy) Miller; and brother-in-law, Jim Krause.

Visitation will be held at Faith United Lutheran Church in Gillett on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at noon with Pastor John Laatsch officiating. Marvin will be laid to rest next to his wife, Dorothy in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Gillett.
