Lee A. Meyer

Lee A. Meyer, 69, of Shawano, went home to his Lord on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton.

Lee Albert Meyer was born Sunday, Nov. 27, 1949, at Wiedman’s Maternity Home in Whitewater to Harold and Audree (Jennings) Meyer. He graduated from Stoughton High School in 1968. Soon after graduating, he met and was united in marriage to Judy Kumm of Bonduel on April 11, 1970.

In July 1970, Lee was drafted and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam until returning stateside in June 1971. Lee and Judy were blessed with three children. They later separated after 40 years of marriage and had become friends in recent years and enjoyed each other’s company when traveling to their grandson’s baseball games.

After his service in Vietnam, Lee returned to Stoughton and worked for various companies in the Deerfield, Stoughton and Madison areas. He quickly realized that his heart belonged in serving his country, so he reenlisted in the National Guard where he would retire in 2004 with 35 years of service. He was most proud of his service in Vietnam and to his country, and he gained many awards, certificates and honors throughout his military career, including a beloved Purple Heart.

Lee always enjoyed helping others and volunteered for many years with the Embarrass Fire Department. After retiring, Lee, Judy and their youngest son, Josh, traveled in a motorhome seeing many parts of this amazing country that he had served for so many years. After separating from Judy, he finally settled into his home in Shawano. Lee quickly became the neighborhood “fix-it” man, and his neighbors also became his extended family.

In his later years, Lee truly learned to love his Lord through his Baptist faith at Maranatha Baptist Church of Navarino. He learned, analyzed and taught his word of faith. Lee would often be seen socializing with his vast network of friends, neighbors, local business employees, veterans and fellow worshipers.

Survivors include his 93-year-old father, Harold Meyer, of Waupaca; and three children, Jason (Laurie) Meyer, of Appleton, Jessica (Jim) Lederer, of Clintonville, and Joshua Meyer, of Shawano. There are four grandchildren, Brittany (Sy Calaway) Pizzino, of Appleton, Samantha Pizzino, of Madison, Alex Meyer, of Appleton, and Andrew Lederer, of Clintonville. He is further survived by very special friends and neighbors Teresa and Ben Piering, who were his guardian angels.

Lee was preceded in death by his mother, Audree; and a beloved brother-in-law and best bud, Jim Kumm.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. at Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Clintonville. The Rev. Joel Smith will officiate, and private family burial will take place at a later date. Military honors will be provided at the funeral home by members of VFW Post 664, American Legion Post 63, and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63, all of Clintonville. Visitation will be held Thursday from 3 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center and Cherry Meadows Hospice for their care and compassion. Special thanks to Pastor Joel and Chaplain K.C. Shuler for their spiritual support and guidance over these very difficult past five weeks. After being horizontal for weeks, Lee is now “vertical” again.
