Ice Bears move on to state tournament

A successful goal at 10:56 in the third period was just enough to seal the victory for the Bay Area Ice Bears as they defeated the University School of Milwaukee Wildcats at The Ponds of Brookfield Ice Arena on Feb. 23.

The Ice Bears jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead. USM fought back, scoring one goal in the second period and the tying goal at 1:01 in the third period.

The Ice Bears had 38 shots on goal, while the Wildcats had 20.

Bay Area was called for seven penalties for 14 minutes, while USM was called five times for 10 minutes.

The Ice Bears are scheduled to take on the St. Croix Valley Fusion in Middleton on Feb. 29 in round 1 of the state tournament, with the winner playing March 2.

Bay Area 4, Fox Cities 3

The Bay Area Ice Bears girls co-op hockey team, which features players from Pulaski, advanced to the second round of playoff action with a 4-3 win over the Fox Cities Stars on Feb. 20.

The Stars took a 1-0 first period lead only to have the Ice Bears tie it on a goal by Julianne Bradford with assists by Faye Brunke (Pulaski) and Ava McDonald. However, Fox Cities held a 2-1 lead at the end of the period.

Again, Bay Area tied the game at 2-2 in the second period on a Tiana Schmidt goal with assists by McDonald and Briana Anundsen (Pulaski).

In the third period, the Ice Bears went up 4-2. The first goal was scored by Kristina Kruse with assists by Claire Gerarden and Addison Dahl. The next was scored by Sophie Gemignani with assists by Rachael Beeck and Brynn Osbahr. Fox Cities scored one final goal at 13:24.

The Ice Bears were called for four penalties for eight minutes, while Fox Cities was called for five infractions for 10 minutes.

Bay Area players had 25 shots on goal compared to 14 for Fox Cities.
