Hunters sight in rifles, prepare for deer season

Brian Morstad, standing, chats with Brent Rogers on the progress in sighting in Rogers’ rifle. Rogers’ son, Paul, checks where his last shot hit the target on Nov. 16 at the Shawano Gun Club range. Morstad said the biggest challenge for gun club members helping people get their weapons to their most accurate is when people purchase new guns. “It’s not really a problem but it takes a lot longer when a guy comes right out from the gun shop,” Morstad said. He added there’s a difference in how older hunters approach the annual ritual, “They just take their one shot just to know the sights haven’t changed, like it hasn’t for the past five years.”

Collin Arvey, gun club officer, noted the sighting-in ritual has been going on for at least 20 years with about 110 people using the range this year. Arvey estimated the number is up from last year with 80-90 probably the historial average.
