VOLLEYBALL

Gresham 3

Manawa 1

Gresham knocked off Manawa to win the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division title in Gresham on Thursday. The Wildcats finished 6-0 in conference play after topping the Wolves by scores of 25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 25-21.

Karisa Nietzer finished with 30 kills to power Gresham, while Valarie Cerveny added 12. Hannah Cerveny tallied 36 assists and 13 service points. Jayden Jensen and Jada James each had 19 digs.

"I'm extremely proud of the way this team played together throughout the conference season," said Gresham coach Tim Wild. "We don't have a very deep bench, as we played our last two conference matches with seven players. That included a very long, competitive, match against Bowler on Tuesday and a close, four-set match with Manawa on Thursday. It seemed like someone always stepped up when we needed a big play or a shift in momentum during a set."

Witt-Birn 3

Amherst 2

Wittenberg-Birnamwood earned a tough CWC-East road win over Amherst on Thursday. The Chargers won by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-8 to remain perfect in conference play.

Marissa Groshek and Emma Herb led Witt-Birn with 18 and 17 total kills, respectively. Kaitlyn Clark had 10 block kills.

McKenna Metropulos finished with 41 assists, while Elizabeth Muscha had 14 digs and three aces. McKenna Foster and Madison Schwalbach each tallied nine digs.

“It was a hard fought night for us, but we pulled it out in five (sets),” said Witt-Birn coach Becky Rew. “Amherst is always tough competition. They did a great job blocking and making us earn every point.

“The big difference maker in the fifth set was that we didn’t let them have any runs longer than two points and we started tipping. All night long, we had long volleys where they picked up many of our hard hits but once we starting tipping it was hard for them to defend both.”
