GIRLS BASKETBALL

Witt-Birn 71

Gillett 46

Wittenberg-Birnamwood started the game on a 30-5 run before easing to a nonconference victory over Gillett on Thursday in Wittenberg.

Emma Herb led Witt-Birn by scoring 24 points, grabbing eight rebounds and tallying five steals. Abi Fraaza chipped in 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, while Reese Rogowski had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Witt-Birn shot over 50% from the field while improving to 2-0.

Bonduel 64

Green Bay West 45

Allaina Robaidek and Kara Troxel powered Bonduel to a nonconference win over Green Bay West on Thursday in Green Bay.

Robaidek scored 16 points to lead the Bears, with Troxel adding 15. With the win, Bonduel improved to 2-0.

Josie Hoffman finished with 12 rebounds and seven points, while Breanna Schnell pulled down 11 rebounds. Kylie Hoffman finished with four steals.

“We rebounded the ball really well, getting 29 on the offensive end. Everyone contributed on both ends of the floor,” said Bonduel coach Jerry Reinke.

Gresham 72

Lena 36

Gresham doubled up Lena in a nonconference matchup on Thursday in Gresham.

Valarie Cerveny led Gresham with 18 points, while Hannah Cerveny tallied 16. Makayla Belongia finished with 14 points and Brooklyn Hoffman had 10.

The Wildcats moved to 1-0 on the season.

Shawano 49

Sturgeon Bay 40

Shawano outscored Sturgeon Bay 29-19 in the second half to pull away for a nonconference victory on Thursday in Shawano.

Rachel Reed hit three 3-pointers and led Shawano with 16 points. Brianna Wright chipped in with 15 points, while Odessa Arce had nine.

“Team gutted out this win and has a ton of heart and determination, which is great to see,” said Shawano coach Ryan Koenig. “Hard work is paying off that they put in over summer.”

Clintonville 68

Antigo 48

Clintonville picked up a nonconference road win at Antigo on Thursday.

Elly Arndt scored 17 points to lead Clintonville, which improved to 1-0. Abby King, Jamine Wilson and Erin Viergutz each scored 10 points, while Selina Torrez had eight.

Viergutz also pulled down 14 rebounds and had three assists. Arndt and King had three assists each.

“The first game of the year always tells you where you are at in terms of what you have to work on. Still, we did enough good things to get a win,” said Clintonville coach Nick Yaeger. “We had a big lead twice, and give credit to Antigo for battling back and cutting our lead to a two-possession game a few times. I’m proud of our girls and how they were able to hold off Antigo when they made those runs on their home court.”

Almond-Bancroft 56

Marion 24

Marion was unable to keep pace with Almond-Bancroft in a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover matchup on Thursday in Almond.

Kyla Zillmer led Marion with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Tessa Brei had eight points and seven boards.

“Our inexperience was on full display in the game,” said Marion coach Brad Fischer. “But after we got over the jitters from the first half, we played tremendously better. Almond played well tonight. Their offense was clicking and they had great team spacing.”

Elcho 55

Tigerton 32

Tigerton could not keep pace with Elcho in a nonconference game in Elcho on Thursday.

Savannah Swartz led Tigerton with 14 points, while Colleen Smith chipped in six.

"We did improve tremendously from the game we played on Tuesday (a 44-9 loss to Suring)," said Tigerton coach Arthur Plaster. "They really played better and worked together as a team."
