The nephew of a retiring state senator won the Democratic primary to succeed him, and a Northeast Wisconsin Republican leader easily fended off a primary challenge from within his own party, in the fall primary election Tuesday.

Jonathon Hansen, a De Pere City Council member and nephew of Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay, defeated Sandra Ewald of Green Bay to win a ballot position opposite Eric Wimberger, a Green Bay Republican who narrowly lost to Dave Hansen in the 2016 general election.

The unofficial final results showed Jonathon Hansen with 3,754 votes to Ewald’s 2,082, a 64.3%-35.7% margin.

State Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, cruised past challenger Andi Rich and will face Karl Jaeger, a Marinette Democrat, in November.

The unofficial tally was Nygren 4,447, Rich 910, an 83%-17% margin.
