SHAWANO — The Shawano Community High School girls tennis team knocked off Bay Conference opponent Green Bay West 7-0 in the team’s home-opening match on Tuesday.

Isabella Buettner (No. 1), Peyton Buerman (No. 2), Rylie Anderson (No. 3) and Jillian Black (No. 4) all earned wins in singles action for the Hawks.

Lydia Dobberstein and Grace Licausi teamed up for a strong victory in No. 1 doubles play. The teams of Chloe Krueger and Haley Williams (No. 2) and Alana Krolow and Aubree Zastrow (No. 3) earned forfeit wins.

Buettner, Buerman and Anderson all won their singles matches in straight sets. Black spent about two hours on the court to earn a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 victory over Gou Vang.

Anderson made things look easy in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Megan McLaughlin.

“Green Bay West has always come with a great attitude and is one of the most friendliest teams I have ever played,” said Anderson. “In order for me to win my match tonight, I had to be in the right mindset. Coach (Matt) Zoll always tells us to make the easy shots easy, and that is what I did tonight. I focused on having a good attitude and remembered to have fun.”

Buerman and Buettner also cruised to wins. Buerman topped Grace Roberts 6-0, 6-2, while Buettner earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jasmeine Steber.

Dobberstein and Licausi continued their strong season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over the tandem of Lilly Roberts and Savannah Potthier.

“I’m super proud of how the team played as a whole tonight,” said Buerman. “The few matches that I got to watch, I could definitely see improvement from the beginning of the season.”

“To keep our success rate up, we all still need to work on keeping a positive mindset. It’s often difficult to reset after a point, especially as a singles player. Although we have gotten better at it through the season, there is still lots of room for improvement.”

The Hawks’ Wednesday match against Fox Valley Lutheran was pushed back to Sept. 23 due to adverse weather. Shawano is scheduled to host Menasha on Thursday at 4 p.m.
