OCONTO FALLS — The Shawano Community High School girls golf team continued its strong fall season with a third-place finish at the Oconto Falls Invite on Monday at River Island Golf Course.

The Hawks turned in a team score of 421, trailing only Wrightstown (405) and Marinette (392).

Taylor Johnson led the way for Shawano, posting an 18-hole round of 97 to take third as an individual. She fired a 46 on the front nine.

Emily Heling finished second on the team, carding a 105.

“I can use today as a confidence boost for myself because it gives me another good score to put on my record,” said Heling. “I didn’t get down on myself, nor did I have a hard time staying focused on the game instead of my score. This day has taught me to let my bad shots be in the past and just focus on the next shot.”

Kiley Rusch shot a 50 on the front nine and finished with a round of 109. Macie Herm had nearly identical marks, posting a 51 on the front nine and finishing with a 110.

Georgia Eggert was the Hawks’ other golfer, posting a 114.

“After today, I think we have a new sense of what we can do,” said Johnson. “Obviously, there is still room for improvement, but we are moving in the right direction with bringing down our team score. Each one of us has put a lot of time in to the areas that we are struggling in and that has helped our individual games. With that, I think that if we continue to work hard and drop our scores as a team we will have a lot of trust in each other going into the rest of the season.”

Bonduel finished the invitational in ninth with a team score of 501.

Leading the way for the Bears was Ava Pleshek, who scored a 56 on the back nine to card a 116.

Sydney Luepke wasn’t too far behind, tallying a 120 after a 59 on the front nine.

“My driving was kind of off and on today, but my fairway shots and chipping made up for it,” said Luepke.

Thea Tauchen shot a 129, Priscilla Lagunes posted a 136 and Haylee Van Allen shot a 150 to round out the team.

Team scores: 1. Marinette 392; 2. Wrightstown 405; 3. Shawano 421; 4. Denmark 423; 5. Luxemburg-Casco 429; 6. Oconto Falls 441; 7. Pulaski 471; 8. Seymour 474; 9. Bonduel 501.
