The Gillett Secondary School volleyball team is down a few impact players from last year and under the direction of a new coach, but the team is still expecting big things on the court this fall.

Jill Halla is the team’s new coach, and she’s excited to get the season underway. “I expect our team to be one of the top in our conference,” said Halla. “We have some talented players, and am I excited to see what we can do.”

Leading the team on the court will be seniors Emily Umentum and Karissa Schaal, who both were honorable mentions in the Marinette & Oconto Conference a season ago. Schaal most often serves as a middle hitter, while Umentum is the Tigers’ setter.

“Our goal for this season is to go into every practice and game with a positive attitude and be willing to always improve ourselves,” said Schaal.

“One thing that can be improved is teamwork,” she continued. “We win together as a team, and we lose together as a team.”

Also returning to the courts this fall with plenty of experience is senior Aubrey DeBauch and junior Naomi Anker. DeBauch is another hitter for the Tigers, while Anker serves as the team’s libero.

Junior hitter Katilynn Dodge is a new varsity player that Halla expects to play a role this fall.

Last year under new co-coaches, Gillett finished in the top half of the conference standings. The Tigers earned a No. 3 seed for the postseason and earned a playoff win before being bounced in a five-set thriller in a regional final.
